Why are modern garages so small?
My garage is just 6" longer than my Omega (with tow bar) and I have to nudge the wall to stop when I drive in. Tonight I left the old bird in gear and BANG smashed into the wall again.
So I've nicked the kids whiteboard to cover the hole and told the wife it's so they can play when I'm working on the car - which is more often now.
FYI not a mark on the car - must be down to the chrome number plate trim. ::)

Yeah m8 i have to agree they are stupid little things that is just bog enough for my scorpio and the meega iz very very close aswell my old volvo V70 wouldnt fit in there >:(
-
Its called space saving, or should I say savings for the developers/builders, should maybe consider an access hatch in the car roof ;D ;D
-
Yip mine too.....
Tell you what i did.....
I got a thin piece of timber(the stuff you get on the back of a wardrobe or chest of drawers!) used 'no-more-nails',stuck it on the wall at the contact point of the bumper and wall,i then bought 2 jumbo car sponges and stuck them to the wood with 'no-more-nails'.....perfect!! stops the bumper getting scratched and it means you can put the car hard up against the wall so you know its in the garage as far as it needs to go!!
Jobs a good'un!

I know I shouldn't but.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

No you shouldn't. ;D
But seeing as you did, it's 16" wide too - it's just the length I have an issue with.

I'm sure there is some rude comeback, but I will refrain........

Easy way to sort this problem when parking is as follows:
Park car as normal (ie without hitting anything!).
Attach a piece of string with a tennis ball on the end to the ceiling so that the ball is resting against front/rear screen (depends on whether you drive /reverse in) when the car is in the correct position. :)
I set this up for a friend to stop his wife doing the exact same thing! ;)

Or you can get proper laser beam type detectors....
-
As laser beam type detectors has been mentioned by TheBoy why not opt for the cheaper option I should think it works the same.
Why not just fit parking sensors surely that would tell you when to stop when moving forward/reversing into the garage.
Just my tuppence worth :)

.... Cos they look bloody awfull! I've only driven a 'car' ( if a Hyundai Getz can be classed as a car ;) ) equiped with this latest 'must have' once. They buzzed & bleeped at will irrellevant of what was behind.

I've got a huge garage me!! I can turn a car round in it!* :smug)
*When it's not full of Senator parts!! ::)

Mine work OK :-/
-
Parking sensors - not able to work close enough for 6" accuracy :(
Tennis ball - used to have a ping pong ball but found it annoying when not in use.
TBH so scared of door shaving boot lid when it comes down I like to tuck it as far up to the wall as poss. (This happened when the wife parked the Cav a few years back and thought she'd be ok) :-/

I just used to have a bit of broomstick stick into an old tin as a base. When the bumper hit the stick it would waggle and I was home. Didn't damage the bumper either.
The new method I discovered (and it's "missus proof"). Parked the car where I wanted it and used a yellow paint pen on the wall to mark the point where the passenger wing mirror was. When you drive in, you just line up the edge of the mirror with the line and you end up in the same place everytime. It also has the effect of making sure you (or the missus!) is looking how near to that wall you're getting.
Wish I'd had it at the other end of the drive the other day though after I bent the edge off the mirror of my other halfs Laguna on the gate post while looking in the other mirror!

Sounds like RMcB could make a few bob offering parking lessons cheap.

Is this the real reason the Omega was scrapped - it's too long to park & makes the builders look bad?

Unless Vx or GM have got major shares in Construction companies I doubt it very much ;D ;D

Not sure, but they do residential & commercial mortgages via GMAC so you never know....

Thinks its more to do with plot sizes, when it comes to house building whats the smallest you can get away with, thats probabaly the brief to the architect. But most companies have standard design layouts, which vary in size dependant upon the size of land. But building regs change every year, which means designs in some cases have to change. :y

Works ok util it's a bit windy, then the ball moves about. My suggestion is to carefully position the car in its park spot, then place a bit of 3" x 2" behind the wheel nearest the back of the garage, pushed up against the tyre. Remove car from garage, and carefully draw around wood so that you don't accidently kick the rather thing out of position. Fix wood to floor with a couple of long screws, or if your dead clever a couple of bits of 10mm studding into 10mm holes in the floor, so the thing can be pulled up out of the way if needed. When parking, as soon as you feel the tyre against the wood stop mooving and apply brake. No dents :)
-
I could always remove the stud wall - big hole in it now anyway - and park the nose in the utility room & I'd have an extra 5".
There's only a sink and a washig machine in it anyway - not a Hotpoint or Bosch before you ask. ;D
