Since I changed the HBV in May the car has been suffering from a steady but small loss of coolant.
Up until now have been running on tap water pending sorting the coolant loss, tank has always been clear.
Decided today to do a pressure test, found the expansion tank full of oil/water mix.
Is this an oil cooler failure? Or could it be something else?
-
Sounds pretty convincing oil cooler failure ,sorry to say :(
Quite a straight forward job to fix although you will need to ensure you fully flush all that oil sludge from the coolant system.Good guide in the maintenance section.
Also worth changing thermostat at same time as that will probably be gunged up too.
Dont buy second hand cooler imho .Follow guid and you will be fine :y

Classic oil cooler failure, don't drive it until it's been fixed :y

How long have you been runnign without fresh antifreeze?
-
Oh yes oil cooler

Since May :-[
Changed HBV, forgot to buy antifreeze when I did the job. Bought it, noticed slight coolant loss, thought sort it before putting antifreeze in. Can't belive 4 months have elapsed. :o
Only covered about 1500 miles. Expansion tank totally clear last week.
What's the best source for replacement cooler? GM genuine? If so what price am I looking at?

Vauxhall parts warehouse / vaux world do kits at good rates with genuine bits :y

The running on tap water is what has caused your failure (antifreeze has anti corrosion additives).
Oil cooler kit can be got here:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VAUXHALL-OIL-COOLER-V6-OMEGA-SINTRA-SIGNUM-93176626-/190843297148?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2c6f259d7c#ht_909wt_907
Other items are Vx supply, you should get some trade discount and there not to pricey

Thanks for the information. :y

Thanks for the information. :y
Console yourself with the thought that the oil cooler usually only needs replacing once in the life of an Omega. :-\
I had the same problem. All fixed now. :y

Or if correctly serviced, never in the life time of the car :y

I've checked the guide but can't see the torque value for the E12 bolts around the oil cooler plate.
Could someone tell me what it is?
Thanks
-
I have 20 Newton Metres in my notes (from when I did this job) for the cooler cover plate torx bolts.
-
Iirc its 2onm for the small bolts (ie cover plate) ,and 30nm for the large ones (ie coolant bridge/oil cooler pipes to cooler).
-
Thanks. :y :y

+1 :y and don't forget to rest it over night for the sealer to harden properly, so don't fill it with coolant :y :y

Thanks for the reminder. Easily forgotten in trying to finish the job. :y :y :y
