I fear your thread title may be inappropriate given the nature of this awful tragedy. :(

Cheers everyone - I am off to Istanbul tomorrow - just what I needed. It is also September the 11th. 12 years ago on that day I was checked in at Heathrow bound for New York when it all kicked off.

According to the news he had been released by the police the day before having been arrested for threatening to kill them; either way a tragic way to end a holiday....... >:( >:(

I was chairing a meeting in a conference room in the main council building, the meeting ended and there was some activity in the nearby kitchen and people were gathering around a portable tv. I saw this and immediately invited anyone and everyone into the conference room where we had better TV facilities..... :o tbh when I got back to my office there was a wonder if we were going to be still alive in a few days........ :( :(

A lot of the staff at United, who lost 2 planes that day, deliberately work every 9/11. My wife lost 2 friends and got stuck for over a week on the west coast. A good friend of ours was flying her first trip as purser after getting qualified, her flight was diverted to Dehli and United, overwhelmed at losing 2 planes, basically left them to make their own way back despite sending the plane back empty. She eventually managed to get her crew back on a Virgin flight.
I also never forget that the liquid bombers were going to target the very flight Mrs G was working that chaotic day. We often have a debate as to whose job is more dangerous.

A side effect of working for an American airline perhaps :-\ they seem to have more than their fair share of homicidal maniacs out to prove a point...
A shame really, inspite of their faults, there are not a bad bunch of people :y

I flew back from Belfast tonight.Didnt realise the date until I was sat on the plane reading the paper and looked at the date on the page.
On the day it happened we were just about to leave the house and a newsflash come on the TV.We then sat down and watched the horror unfold.
Exactly a month earlier we had been stood at the top of the world trade centre looking down at NYC. We Then flew back to the U.K. from Logan airport, Boston, which was the airport the hijackers flew from, a few weeks later.
Shocked doesn't begin to describe it tbh. :(

After the abortive trip to New York (supposed to be travelling onto Bermuda) we retrieved luggage from Heathrow after about 3 hours and ended up going to Florence instead. In fact I had only just returned from a week in Nigeria on 10th September 2001. After 10 days in Tuscany I had to fly to Brazil ending up after 3 flights in Ilheus. At this time Americans were generally refusing to travel so on return from Brazil I flew to Washington - what a bizarre time this was.
So on 11th September 2002 I was on a plane to Strasbourg - I think there were no more than 4 or 5 passengers.
Returning to the Turkey thread I am staying in the Intercontinental near Taksim square - traffic has been a joke - got back from Ulus 29 restaurant (Cem may know it) to see they were closing off square as though something about to kick off. If it does I have a perfect view from 16th floor.....

This week protesting events started back again.. So taksim may not be a safe place for anyone.. if you see any protest event move away asap.. you can be a target of flying teargas capsule any moment.. :(
ps: police nowadays is crazy and arrest even the foreign media workers.. so, if they stop you, be calm, show your id and if they decide to arrest you dont react.. if you have bussiness suits and a tie.. you dont have to worry ;D
pps: I'll pm you my number just in case you are in trouble.. please speak slowly ;D
