Title: Another frecking Oil Cooler 3.2
Post by: zirk on 13 September 2013, 19:29:41
All my time with Migs, appart the early TD's, have untill fairly recently all been 3.0's, never had an Oil Cooler go, in the last 12 months, 3.2 Cooler gone, 2 months ago 2.6 gone and now another 3.2 gone, and we are not talking about high milage or negleted cars here. Thought the later DBW's had a SS upgraded cooler, nah, not in my book. >:(

Im beginning to think this stainless cooler thing is something of an urban myth tbh. There seems to be 2.6/3.2 ,s all over the place with leaking coolers these days. :-\
Weather is getting a bit crap for doing the job outdoors,but............. ::) ;D

Mine never had a S/S cooler,   ::) >:( it has now  :y and it was a lot heavier than the original in weigh and the way it is made. My milage was only 49,000 and got full history.  ::)

Full history means nothing, its coolant changes and the correct antifreeze mix that is key.

The cooler has not changed since 1995

The ones Ive seen all seem to leak between the plates weld / join, normally the top one and or second plate, almost like its started with an hairline crack or break, guessing the top of the cooler doesn't always get immersed in water or thats where the weakest point is in terms of vibration where its fixed to the top cover.

The original mild steel cooler was quickly changed for stainless. Not sure entirely when, but looks to be before the MFL came out.

The stainless ones will leak if the coolant has been abused.  Those at the last Wycombe meet will see what my 5yr antifreeze was like after (at most 4 years, I thought it was changed 2years ago).

I've had two 2,6's that have both started to leak water outside from under/near the rear large nut, the one that holds the cooler itself on the "lid". And both have stripped the thread from that area when removing. Have heard people with non-DBW cars having succeeded to re-seal coolers but these both cases it has been "new cooler in" due stripped thread. Some fault in assembly in factory or just poor/wrong materials?
