Just had the most unexpected chat wiht my insurance company on the phone!
Me: Hi, I'm going to convert my car to run on LPG. I'm doing the conversion myself on 26th September, so could you add this modification to run from this date please?
Them: Certainly sir, that's all done for you, there is no extra charge and all of your terms and conditions remain the same.
Me: Thanks. Do you require anything else from me?
Them: No sir
Me: Obviously I'm doing the conversion myself, and I will obviously get it certified, do you want to see the certificate of confirmity?
Them: No sir
Me: Do you need the vehicle added to the LPG database?
Them: No sir
Me: So that's it then, all sorted?
Them: Yes sir, new insurance documents are in the post.
REALLY?
I mean, I'm going to get it checked purely for my own peace of mind, but...... shouldn't the company at least want it to be on the database before they cover it???

Not in my experience. ;)
The database is just the latest attempt by LPGA/UKLPG or whatever they call themselves these days to generate a monopoly for their members. The insurers can take it or leave it. I'm guessing that, as LPG cars are fairly rare, and, despite what lobbying from UKLPG would claim, incidences of the even rarer DIY converted cars dying expensively in a huge mushroom cloud are non-existent, your insurer probably doesn't consider it's worthwhile bothering to check the register.

As said it depends on the insurer. I had to jump through all the hoops, and some that I didn't need to, when covered by direct line. They wanted all the rules to apply and more, but didn't know what the rules where. Oppsing eejits.
Consequently mine is on the register job done and in place regardless of my current insurers requirements. So was a non event under Admiral.

I made sure that both mine are on, purely for my own piece of mind - when I wrote off Mrs TB's Rover, I recall when I rang the insurance to get a tow truck out to recover it, they were asking searching questions trying to find a way out of having any outlay before they would deal with it, I must have been on the phone for 30mins or so.
Fortunately I was squeaky clean, but I can see something like an uncertified LPG conversion would be a simple excuse for them.

None of mine have when I've taken out the policy, except one quote when I thinking of LPGing the first.
Its the point of actually claiming that the little shitbags start to wriggle.

just as a side note, I wonder whether it would be useful to others to have a list of the insurance company's that are somewhat more fussy than others in the LPG area ?

Difficult, as I expect most would only become difficult at point of claim.
