Title: Should I buy an Omega Estate?
Post by: TheBoy on 27 September 2013, 13:54:41
Not to drive, obviously, as I don't like them, nasty 'orrible things.  I was thinking to use purely as a storage facility....

If it's cheap enough, why not? Although if it's not going anywhere, would a shed transit not be better?

I wanted something cheap, and we all know that £3.50 is too much for most Omegas ;D

Bought an old wooden railway wagon for £60 a few years back to use for hay storage - they're pretty big (will take a car easily) ;)

I heard a rumour there might be an 3.2 Omega estate for sale near here very soon. Far too good to use as a shed though. ::)  :-X

If its a working example it would also fix your load carrying/lack of a hatchback problem.

I must admit, I'm kind of regretting not asking how much when he rang me at lunch time ::) But as I was on the way to collect one that appealed more I couldn't think about it ::)

If you come down this way, be sure to let me know... There's a bed if you need it :y

I was also offered the car yesterday.I told JCB that the sort of offer I had in mind would probably be insulting to him and I wouldn't do that,so he should advertise it for sale instead. The offer I had in mind was around £500. ::)
I would have bought it last night when I saw the ad,but swmbo is at the end of her tether with Omegas in various states of repair or dismantling cluttering up the place.
My plan was to hopefully soften her up a bit over the weekend and hopefully buy the car Monday. Of course I now wish I had offered £500 for it yesterday, and suffered the ear bashing, but he who hesitates....... :'( ::) ;D

I always wanted a saloon,  but the practicality of the estate is a no brainer ....  when encumbered with large family,  and the need to carry equipment on a regular basis

or the need for a mobile shed.

Not to mention the uncanny ability to be able to run on lpg AND carry/store a double bed (or an hours shopping from Ikea) simultaneously  ;D

Ikea???

Not me tf ;D point is an lpg saloon struggles with both boot space and useability ::)

Replace ikea with fence posts, doors, lengths of timber etc and the point stands :y

Besides, if TB had an estate, he wouldn't need the pikey loft extension to get all his hollibobs stuff in the car, which would make it easier for Mrs TB to load ::)

almost no other car on the market can take 3.2 metre lengths of timber.....    or my 9ft step ladders,   without needing a roof rack .

or a king size mattress without folding it .

I can get 3m of 6"x6" trunking in a saloon.....no need for an estate.

How often do you move a matress??

I took my zafira to Wickes to buy a 6'6" x 2'6" door. Back seats flat no problem, I thought. Wrong. I had to push the drivers sest so far forward thast I was driving with the steering wheel digging into my chest, very ungainly/unsafe.
Meanwhile, a guy in a passat saloon drops his back seats, opens the boot and pops the door in easily.

Hardly a surprise ::) Zafira is shorter than an Astra estate...

Yes, all very well, but someone, namely TB put a bloody great big lpg tank across the back seat ;D

Is300, door in, no problem. ::)

And that's a small estate. More of a large hatchback really.

Can't really comment as it's on standard suspension with 225/55/16's, But then I've never particularly enjoyed throwing estates around (my dad always had estates due to his job) as they always feel too me as if they are just on the verge of letting go when you throw them round a corner.... (Both RWD and FWD). I also think the metal sheet under the parcel shelf on a saloon makes the rear end feel much more communicative and tightens it up.

Guess you need to try one.  :y

Tried Bod dents for short spin. ::) (now Jimbobs)

Thought it was ok although I didn't push it obviously, I was busy looking for tramlines as its an mv6.

I always imagined them to be over sprung when unloaded, but I didn't get that feeling from it.

Looking at letting my estate go later this year. Got to do "tug and taxi" for ABS at the NEC this year first though, unless a tempting offer comes along.

I got the shed Estate version and lpg tank in spare wheel well-smaller than monster tank that was behind rear seats-whoever put that in was a w******* Might as well have had a saloon >:( However now got all the space i need-ok only got 100 ish mile range but plenty of lpg stations about.
Saloon is pointless for me-had a few in past but wouldnt have one now for free in any engine size---well could rip out lump for table before scrap rest though--as thats what saloons are worth----break all really IMHO

I could not live with that, it's 150 odd miles on run to MrsT's parents. My old bike had 100 mile range, felt I was always looking for fuel  :(

Wasn't  that Joshs' one, or my tother one :-\ Totally lost track ::)

Although, mine did get a bit frisky last time you were in it iirc ;D

Don't think TB had much of an issue with the handling when he drove it... and he was trying hard enough to get bits of the front treads to come off :o (they were down to 2mm though ::))

The issue I have with estates is noise. All that empty space behind you does tend to accentuate the road noise and rattles, etc. For the number of times I need the load area, it's not worth living with IMHO. For when I do need to space, I've got a trailer. :y

My thoughts exactly, plus the compromised handling partly due to suspension being geared for load...
Title: Re: Should I buy an Omega Estate?
Post by: MaxV6 on 01 October 2013, 21:15:28
noise is dealt with by closing the load area cover, and leaving a big heavy blanket deliberately messed up in the boot (assuming boot is empty)

seriously,  it;s REALLY not that bad.....   and i'm a noise freak.....   (practical acoustics engineering = the blanket)

That's why I have a genuine Vauxhall metal mesh guard ::) just like the roll up version, but welded steel 8)

As for noise, you have a stereo TB, use it ::)

They just don't feel as nice the Estates, Saloons are more cosy and feel more secure. Feel like your driving a greenhouse with an estate  ;D

Most likely a short term fix but i found silicone spray to be very useful in curing noises such as rattling door pins and helping lazy seatbelts to pull back faster, 5 weeks in my door pins are still silent  :y Might work on other noisy trim  :-\, Just wish the stuff would have worked on my buzzing front centre air vents which are driving me crazy, Awaiting for yet more air vents to be delivered :'( ;D

This would be ideal for your storage requirements and when you feed your hamsters beans again, the bodywork will do little damage to the surroundings.  :y :y :y :y

Handling may not be up to your spirited driving, but the protruding chrome door protectors handles are there for a good reason.  ::) :o :P ;D ;D ;D ;D
