Title: Fuel consumption
Post by: N61AOP on 30 September 2013, 09:12:35
Just got over 35mpg on a round trip from Somerset to the Lake District from my Omega 2.2 auto.  :)  Pretty pleased with that as on my usual running around I rarely get better than 23mpg.

I got 32mpg out of my 3.0l auto on one of my holidays to the south of France. I was pretty please with that as well!

Congrats, was there any helium balloons fastened to your right foot lol, I only managed to squeeze out 27mpg from mine on a trip from Margate to ashford (Middlesex) and back, almost 200 miles and exactly half a tank.
I did have 4 passengers a semi full boot and started with a full tank so I might have been a little heavier.

It probably doesn't corner quite as well with the pikey loft extension fitted :-\

No, it came back on a low loader..... ;)

Pre LPG days, so no pikey boxes :D. Fully laden to the rafters though on the journey there (Aigues Mortes) and back, but obviously mostly empty for the 10 days or so we were pottering about down there.

As we were in convoy, we have a code of honour, the convoy leader sticks to the maximum speed limit. If others fall behind for whatever reason, its their responsibility to do whatever to catch up (except emergencies, where walkie talkies (and phones if necessary) are used - never leave a man down is the other part of the code). So, as you can imagine, there were some quite high speed runs and overtakes ::).  When I was leading, I was averaging high 30s mpg on the motorways at 130kph.

These are also the only time I've ever managed 500m from a tank in that MV6  :-[

I try to forget that year. Economy was marginally improved on the way home, as I had a 1.7 diesel Astra-H Estate to get back to Calais from Dijon.  And I can confirm that it goes faster than its stated top speed, but did it use some fuel (virtually entire tank to do 350ish miles) :o

I've just returned 29.9 MPG on a 400 mile return trip from Lincolnshire to Powys.  :-\

Last time I did the trip, the old girl manged 31.4 MPG. :y

No, but on the occasions I've compared mine with brim to brim readings, it's not too far out.

I'd go along with that, Andy.

The last time I did a 'brim to brim' test on my MV6, it was within 2 MPG.

25mpg from 2.2 on last tank of gas, cost 70p litre to fill up. So 12.6 ish pence a mile, to get same cost per mile from a diesel, would need to average 52mpg  8)

Proper calculation (not OBC) proves 14.2MPG.  ;D

Stupid Lambda Sensors.

If anyone has the knowledge to write the emission controls out of the ECU, they would make an absolute fortune on the 'update'.

All on Esso 'rip-off' Ultimate fuel.

On the contrary, as nobody in their right mind would "upgrade" this.

26.7mpg over 228miles, That's mainly A & B roads.

How often does everyone reset the system ?, I tend to do it every long trip before driving off or every few hundred miles.

I reset the avg mpg  the time, until I get a good figure :).   Anyone know what the MID's average MPG extended reset is all about - if you reset, it goes to dashes, but if you hold the reset it goes to stars.  Star reset erases all mpg memory perhaps?

Suspect if I had an Insignia diesel I could average 55mpg looking at the official figures anyway.

Was looking at them the other day, the Mk4 Mondeo, with similar miles/spec appears to be much cheaper  ???  :-\

.. and comes with a free tartan blanket for the parcel shelf. ;)

Saw 5th gear were testing the Mazda 6 the other day.. Reckoned it was 10MPG better on fuel than the Mundano and quicker. Has the best looks of the bunch too IMHO.

Then again, if I was desperate enough to be considering a diseasel repmobile, I'd probably rework the driveway to buy me another parking space, keep the Omega and do what Guffer has done.

Mundeos are cheap for a reason ::)

Shall have to take a tape measure to the Leaf with regard interior space, might have working potential if it proves reliable...

Do hear of quite few injector issues, although I've always found big Fords quite comfy. Just pondering really as the day will come in next few years, when the Omega has to go  :'(

Trying to make them last as long as possible, 145k & 166k, both should do 200k easy. Hoping for a few more years!

The cheapest ones tend to be 1.8s a woeful engine to drive, especially with a slush box. Had one as a courtesy car that managed a whole 27mpg :o

Better of saving your cash and sticking with the Omega :y

Well, if I can average low 50s from a CDTi 2.0l Insignia, I'd expect you to fare far, far better

Yep that's what i do  :y

When i first got it, It was in the thousands of miles, Probably never bothered to reset it, Most I've had it up to was around 600 miles around 25mpg if i remember correctly before re-setting again.

My 2.6 always returns 30mpg on my daily round trip to work, 54 miles on very good A roads, my wife has very short journeys in the 2.2 auto estate around 19mpg ,on a decent run around 33mpg..

The old city is lovely, nice resturants and bars where you can sit and watch the world go by peacefully.  Up the road, though, that shithole called La Grand Rui, thats a bit like, well, a British seaside town ;D

Yes, very pleasant town. I had several good camping holidays staying at a campsite at Saint Marie de la Mer. La Grand Rui I only visited once, which sums the place up.

Very impressive. How accurate do you think? My 35mpg was with no passengers, a small amount of luggage in the boot and mainly at a steady 70 - 80 mph on the motorway.
