Productive day today.
Got broken studs out of the cylinder head, refitted all cams as I wasn't happy with the cam seals sticking out a bit..... fitted cam seals first (as suggested by mark) and I can confirm they should be flush :y
Thermostat/upper rad hose in position (although not bolted down as I've misplaced the new 'o' rings I purchased ::) lucky they're only a few pence.
rear cover on.
cam sprockets on and torqued up.
cams timed up and locked in place.
crank moved up to tdc and locked in place.
torqued up exhaust fannymould bolts...... how I did it i'm not sure as the access is very poor ::)
so left to do (roughly)....
zip up the down pipe to fannymould nuts
fit cambelt
reconnect electric connections
cam covers
inlets and manifold
pulleys and drive belt
trumpets and air box
a lot to do but at least I can see the light at the end of the tunnel :y :y :y :y
ps, if it all goes tits up when I start her up i'm scrapping it and getting a mark IIII Astra!!! ;D

O rings were in big box, sorry forgot to tell you as they were blown across next doors garden :y

Yeah I thought they were too... (the big box that the HGs came in)..... but nope, they've vanished ::) i'm forever putting stuff down in a ''safe place'' and then not remembering where that place is.
To be fair to me though I've kept track of most things. only things i'm missing are the two bolts to nail the stat in..... but I saved loadsa bolts from ralf so should be ok :y
-
You always have lots of bits left over , i got loads .. mainly broken bits ;D Or was that from the pug :-\ Well done mate :y
-
Cheers steve. just really want it back running now. missing it very much. I like my ma's ford but it diesnt drive like the big v6 :-X

Whats happening with the rebuild ??? ??? ::) ;D Mind you its nasty weather to be working outside :(

Did all the cam bearing caps go on in the correct locations? They are numbered / sided :y
-
MaHOOsive thanks to TB for his assistance today. Cambelt on and all covered up. TB popped the belt on with nay trouble at all. Really good guy :y :y :y :y
I've got an opportunity here.....
MOT runs out on the 14th..... can I get it back on the road on the 14th so I don't have to SORN it at all? .............. going to be a long weekend :y
-
Ps, as i'm pretty broke can I re-use my cam covers? They were genuine and they seem pretty pliable still.

When I fitted 3.0 cams to mine I used the gaskets again but they were only a few months old,it didn't leak so try it,just "bear"in mind that they could ;) :y

What the worse that will happen? They'll leak and you'll have to replace them. So not much harm in trying.
*IF* you do reuse, keep a very regular eye on the plug wells, as you don't want to shag plug leads.

Nice one :y

Webby, are the cam bearing shells in the correct orientation?
Yes mate, I kept them in order when I removed them from the heads :y
Ok, so went out for round two today after the F1 highlights.....
Wiring all back together including those tricky earths on the side of the dis module. cable tray back together. put two new o rings on stat pipe, fitted that and torqued that down. sandwich plate bolted and torqued. front cam cover on. aux belt tensioner fitted. front cable tray fitted. cam sensor fitted. PAS bottle refitted.
only a couple of issues.....
- Stat pipe is quite loose to the stat housing with the new o rings in place. I can literally pull it off by pulling the hose from the 'b' bolt end. what can I do to make it a tight fit? I remember pulling the one off ralf and his had a loada sealant in :-X
- Aux belt tensioner is catching on the belt cover. the pulley that is. I have fitted all 5 bolts in the belt cover (inc. that one that's in the top left corner) and its tight yet the pulley still catches. any ideas :-\ i'm wondering if it's warped from the explosion? :o
- pas reservoir empty ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? no idea how as we didn't empty it. and I cant find a pool of pas fluid ??? ??? ???
- I've accounted for all pipes and electrical connections thanks to TBs guidance. however one i'm missing...... the little vac pipe that attaches to the inlets (fuel regulator?)....where does that then attach to from the inlets?
Other than that i'm going to whack on the old CC covers and touch wood it'll be done tomorrow :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

;D ;D that's the thing with the cabby.... I always knew when you were here ::) ;D
hopefully get this thing buttoned up tomorrow :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
oh. I almost forgot. i'm an honest guy. and I could have chosen not to say this. but I don't mind sharing my mistakes.......
I changed the spark plugs today. I took the old ones out and when I went to put in the new ones there was a loada crap in there and I could clearly see some had dropped in to the cylinder on pot 1. completely my mistake.... I should have cleaned the wells when I cleaned the mating surfaces. I've read some stuff on this and it seems that a lot of people have done it ::) a, I right in thinking that I should be ok and the crap will get fried and expelled on first start up?
:)
-
Depends what the crap consists of Webs - long as there's nothing "solid" should get burned out when first fired up.
Know when I managed to dump some oil from failed cam gasket down the plug holes on the Elite, it was quite spectacular when I first fired it up - couldn't see across the road. Took about a mile before it cleared, then all ok after that.

Nah nowt solid... just clumps of congealed oil it looked like.... and what looked like a couple of blades of grass (heads were sitting in my folks' garage near the mower)
