Wholesale prices, the cost of delivery and.....we saw it coming......green taxes. At last an admission that going green is going to cost us dear, with no hope of it ever becoming a viable source of energy.
I fixed for two years starting Oct 1st, thank goodness.

Cue Edward Milliband..... ::)

The £300 winter fuel allowance that nice Mr Cameron gives you helps 'old-timers' such as yourself though. ::) ::) ::) :)

That's £200. If you're going to take the piss, get your facts right. :P

SSE is raising prices because ......
British Gas did and they want to make more cash as well.
I just do not believe all the BS that the energy companies expect us to swallow >:( >:(

I watched Camoron's reaction at lunch time. Well.....I mean I watched Camoron to see his reaction, but there wasn't one.

Meh, Fixed Rate until 2015 so I don't care. By then, it'll all be sorted! :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Price fixing head lines a while back? Or am I step closer the much needed Alzhiemers treatment in the hews today?
-
Living outside the Uk, I can actually see that Miliband has a powerful point.
People in Spain are aghast that electric is going up 3.1% this month. UK price rises are astronomic. It would be interesting to see what price rises the French companies are able to inflict on their customers while inflicting 8% or whatever on their UK customers............
Of course you will have deja vu in years to come with Postal prices. Enjoy the share price increase now. ;D ;D

You make a good point, Varche. I shall be stocking up on stamps very soon.

it was Mr Miliband's party that signed the legally- binding long-term emission target for 2050 which requires the UK to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% below 1990 levels.
The subsidies paid to wind generation are massive.
The cost of buying wind generation off at periods of low demand is massive.
It's a private industry which is exposed to the global energy markets.
Japan became the worlds largest importer of gas virtually overnight as a consequence of the tsunami, causing a dramatic rise in wholesale gas prices.
The National Grid balance the mechanism, the cost is met by the suppliers and hence the consumers.
It's populist politics, a con, it's unworkable garbage.
Just to clarify,
I don't work for one of the big six
I don't think this government are any better, they have no energy policy either.

Not as much as has been coming from Mr Milliband!

With prices on the increase and a very narrow margin between whats used and what can be supplied..
Hamsters at the ready.
Screw em.
Any ideas??

October 2012 the average EU gas import price was $11.58/MMBTU in October 2013 average EU gas import price $11.61/MMBTU. That doesn't look like SSE 4% wholesale price increase to justify an 8.5% rise to me!
You might be interested in this website which shows the average EU gas import price for the last 2 years.
http://ycharts.com/indicators/europe_natural_gas_price (http://ycharts.com/indicators/europe_natural_gas_price)
Last winter and spring, being colder than average means import prices peaked at $12.88/MMBTU hence the reluctance of suppliers to buy at this price, which is why the UK came within 6 hours of running out of gas!
Having to pay higher winter prices for gas due to the UK's very limited storage capacity must have hit their profits, so lets take a look:
Profits 2011-2012: £1.3bn up 2% on 2010-2011
Profits 2012-2013: £1.41bn up 5.6% on 2011-2012
5.6% is well ahead of inflation, so it looks to me like a quasi-monopoly energy supplier continuing to push up prices at the customers expense.
It is interesting how much under the radar Government energy stealth taxes are going up with a rise of 13% in 12 months. Green taxes and other subsidies now account for about 10% of your bill. Don't forget that instead of the Government paying those that receive benefits, their utility bills are capped at a small monthly fee with the energy companies have to cover the rest of the cost, which is then passed on to normal consumers.
The two reasons above and their vertical integration into power generation and gas / oil extraction means their threats of pulling investment in new power stations and gas and oil fields each time the Government threatens to intervene has made the energy companies and their pricing untouchable by the Government, meaning they have basically got us and the Government by the balls.
Notice how much cheaper gas is during the summer when countries that have extensive gas storage facilities stock up to cover the winter peak prices. We only have 2 weeks storage which makes the UK very vulnerable to supply problems and means the energy companies have to hedge winter prices using futures contracts, which will generally mean banks and other financial institutions making an extra profit at a customer's expense and they will be paying more expensive winter prices as well, just trying to flatten any excessive price peaks with these contracts.
OFFers of a weak constitution, they might want to be seated before they open the next link which shows US gas prices from various suppliers!
http://www.quandl.com/markets/global-commodity-markets/natural-gas (http://www.quandl.com/markets/global-commodity-markets/natural-gas)
Yes, $2.32 to $3.69/MMBTU compared to Europe's $11.62/MMBTU. Supplies to Asia are even higher than Europe and are up to a peak of $15/MMBTU.
All the time the EU and UK Governments have an abundance of tree huggers amongst them they are going to continue to pursue high scarce energy policies.
The net result will be more people dying during the winter, where they are unable to heat their homes, so expect an increase in the 20,000+ more people that die during the winter compared to the summer and the offshoring of UK based industries and jobs to take advantage of cheaper energy prices.
I am highly confident that the US economy will recover and start to boom with a combination of cheap energy and their 'can do' attitude, for the UK all I can see is the balance of payments deficit continuing to rise above the current record of over 5% of GDP where we don't pay our way in the world and the continuing decline in living standards. Dropping living standards over the last 6 years have been very painful too many and continuance of this can only increase the pain and poverty.

We should have been doing it 10 years ago like the Yanks for fracks sake!! ::)

We need Nuclear again, but they take years to build :(

Indeed, why on earth it's not managed properly is a mystery - the end of life for plants is well known so should be really simple to build more nuclear before it's needed!

Yet another thing that Liebore took a short term view on and made a horrendous mess of. We will pay for that shortsightedness and incompetence for years to come.

At least the last cold breathe of air will be a clean one..
Total insanity.

France has just upheld its total ban on fracking and if France and Germany get their way within the EU it will be totally banned in all EU countries. >:( >:( >:( >:(
So, don't count on any long term fracking and cheaper energy prices here. :(

And because the EU ordered it to happen. ;)

Cue Edward Milliband..... ::)
Actually, it was a reasonably simple electoral strategy. Promise to to freeze energy prices for two years after election, the big 6 then raise their prices as a defensive mechanism, and Ed points at them and says "I told you so!" Then sits back and collects the votes.
Or am I being too cynical? 8)

Nope not at all! The trouble is that many of the British sheeple will fall for it and we may well be lumbered with a Labour government again! :( ::)
Now let me think, where in the world has controlling prices worked well in the past? :-\ :-\ :-\

I was looking at the SSE 2011-2012 annual report and accounts yesterday (2012-2013 not available yet). Their electricity / gas distribution profit margin is about 4% and on all operations about 8%, so there is not excessive profiteering.
I was also looking at seasonal gas prices. The difference between July 2012 and April 2013 was 15.7%. On this basis what we need is much more gas storage, like many European countries have so we can stock up during the summer and use it during the winter. We currently have about 2 weeks supply storage capacity, which is not enough. This is only very slowly increasing.
The freezing of prices is madness, but then again so was red Ed's dad's political philosophies. ???
