Title: Cam cover Gaskets.
Post by: Jusme on 17 October 2013, 11:45:46
I know that ONLY genuine GM gaskets must be fitted, but, do GM make gaskets? Phoned a supplier today who supply cam cover gaskets and O rings made by 'Elring'. Was told that these are genuine Vauxhall gaskets. Before I end up throwing even more money down the drain, can anyone shed any light on this??  :y

You can use whatever gaskets you want! It's your car ;)

However experience has shown on here that the genuine are best.

As for the make I dont know. But i've rebuilt the top end of my engine with pretty much all Elring stuff (ironically other than the cam cover gaskets) so i'll report up soon once it's running  :y

Ive used pattern gaskets and never had a problem, all down to the person fitting them and cleaning out the breathers properly.

Really poor advice, over the years time and again OOF has proved pattern gaskets are hit and miss. Even with clean breathers, right sealant fitted well. They still leak.

Pattern gaskets has turned into a stupid joke recently, but the aim has always to be most cost effective repair for best value for money.

Hence OOFs recommendation is always genuine.

Not everybody can afford genuine parts,i have said in the past i use pattern parts, with results,my cabby is,still leak free after 10 months use,and that was a £3 gasket,at the end of the,day its the op's car,and what he,can afford to buy.

Yep, in the early days I tried numerous different brands of gasket including FAI, Ebay cheap shite and Elring, but of course, as per the Mad Mechanic, my labour quality is clearly substandard  ;D

THE only reliable gasket that worked was the GM sourced ones.

Elring do make gaskets for GM but they dont make the cam cover ones.....

Thanks for replies. Eventually sourced a pair packaged, genuine GM for £35 inc postage. (been on the shelf awhile??) Plus 16 O rings for £1.60 postage £5.89. Total £7.49. Went the whole hog and ordered a Bosch 2.4.6. coil pack @ £62.53 inc VAT + postage £6.15. O rings from Vauxhall dealer 84p each. Gaskets £65:16..  :y

1) As keep saying, cost effective. Buy pattern buy twice, more expensive and time consuming in long run.

2) You offering advice based on gaskets not even for an Omega then!

Where is a brick wall, I need to hit my head against it  ::)

Each to their own, just stop with your poor advice on them then. Some people want a solution that lasts.  :y

I have to bow to experience on this matter, and cannot really get embroiled in a genuine v pattern argument. But perhaps the bloke who last did my engine didn't do a great job fitting the gaskets?? Only he knows??  :-\

Since 2006 we have tried various gaskets. It's the years of collective testing of loads of owners which has led to this. Not just my opinion. :)

.....and as his workmanship is second to none.. if the gaskets fail he would have to replace them .. so he's not going to take the risk is he ?? .... thus speaks the voice of experience and financial wisdom .... genuine only every time IMHO .. :)
