X84GNB 2.5 petrol manual estate
Coming home last night, EML came on, was on most of the time while on M4 between Chieveley and A46 junction (45 miles). It stayed off once I left the M4. It did the same last Friday. It had not been on all the week. Being a 2.5 I cannot get codes without a Tech2. Does the above behaviour suggest any particular fault? The car displayed no malfunction.

It does work! For some reason I thought 2.5s didn't work. Codes are as follows:
1 2 1 2 1 2 3 8 3 8 3 8 3 1 3 1 3 1 2 1 2 1 2 3 8 3 8 and so on
Hard to read; wife came to help, then got muddled and left me to it. What does it mean?

Ignore 31, as that's normal ignition on/engine off :y
Leaves 21 and 38 :y
Off side pre cat and throttle position sensor...

You are only down the road Terry - I'd be happy to pop down and take a look (plug it in to a Chicken Chow Mein) and get some live Data if needs be?

Thanks gentlemen. Pre cat I assume means the lambda sensor. |That fits the way it would come on and go off, especially on the motorway. I have not got a spare. I suppose I could take it off and clean it with a wire brush, might that help? I probably have a spare throttle position sensor in my pile of bits of cars I have scrapped - I think I have the inlet manifold off a 3 litre I scrapped down at my works; I will check in the morning. That seems less likely to explain the motorway only sympton.
Thanks for the offer of plugging in your Chinese chicken chow mein. Broomies Mate. My son's 2.2 has a light on too, he did not even report it, I only discovered it when I moved his car one day. His car is not here so don't come tomorrow. He is here in the week. I will pM you if I need help when I have tried some things on the 2.5.

I have removed the right hand lambda sensor. It looks all right, not covered in crud or blocked in any way. It is unusual in that it is covered by a hood, the only access to exhaust gases is via four slots. I have not a spare, so I put it back after applying copper grease to the threads. I have not a spare. I have a spare throttle position sensor, but access is difficult with the plenum on the car, and that seems unlikely to be the cause (motorway only) so have not changed it.
I shall await more symptons. Again, thanks to ex taxi al and Broomies Mate.

There is a stretch on the M4, just West of the A46, where my old 2.5 brought up the EML for about a mile. Didn't do it again for weeks until the same stretch of M4, travelling the opposite direction :-\
Engine didn't miss a beat either time. There is a mobile phone mast near the road but that isn't unusual. I never did work out what the issue was :-\
-
Had a 3.0 MV6 that used to do that in 50 mph contraflows when they were 4 lane'ing the M25, would come on if I stuck at 50 after about 3 miles then go off again as soon as I accelerated off. Codes where Lambda related which I changed, never returned after that. :y

Try to get some live data, looking for a lazy lamda, esp at idle

West of the A46 is quite a steep decline for a mile........ likewise (obviously) quite a steep incline heading back towards Jct 18.
I'm up and down this motorway daily and don't encounter issues. Unless the incline has anything to do with it, I'm lost?
There are stretches of Motorway with larger inclines though :-\

Both times it came on during the descent so maybe it was something to do with lazy lambdas. :-\
Alternatively... It was using about 1/2 pint of fully synthetic every 1000 miles at that time so perhaps running a bit rich on the overrun ::) ;D
Car went to the crusher 3 years ago so no way of knowing now.........

I have been travelling up and down the M4 between A46 junction and Swindon East every Friday since 1989 in a variety of Senators and Omegas, and not had this fault before the last two weeks It is clearly a car problem. It has not recurred since Friday. I await more data.
