Title: Oil filter type.
Post by: Bikerdon on 28 October 2013, 20:38:52
Hi all, newbie here, just bought myself an Omega estate 2.6 CDX 2001 model, was just wondering which type of oil filter is fitted to my car, ie, paper element or spin on type. If its spin on type what part no would it be. P.s. From what I have read so far, this seems to be a brilliant and helpful forum, I have an engineering background so I do pretty much all my own maintenance and repair on my cars, but as this is my first foray into Omega ownership I reckon I'll be on here a lot with plenty of questions. Thanks, Bikerdon.

Should be the element unless some body has changed it to the spin on.  :y

Thanks for that, are there any specific parts needed for changing it to spin on type.

You can get the threaded pipe to convert from a dealer not sure the part number it is on here somewhere I changed mine because some Gorilla tightened the top and it broke the webbing inside so it was cheaper to replace with the correct spin on type.  :y

Thanks for all the advice, I'll get underneath tomorrow and check what type it is, if its the element type and it comes apart ok then I'll stick with that rather than changing it to a spin on.

Sorry Don ...... you just happened to be the next person to mention spin on vs paper element. There was a long 'debate' discussing the pro's & con's recently.  :y :y :y :y

It left the factory with a paper element. Of course, it may have been changed to a spin-on by a former owner for reasons that rarely make technical sense.

Assuming its paper element type - take note of the torque figure cast on the lid and tighten it up to that figure. People tend to run into problems when they are tightened beyond that figure. I cant remember the figure at the moment, which is shameful. It should be indelibly etched into my memory by now. :-[ ;D

I was the "culprit" that started the debate on the merits of each some weeks ago as have always had spin on type on the last 2 Omegas owned.

Recently acquired a late 03.3.2 with the paper type and curious if advantages of changing this to spin on.After replacing the filter on this car I can say it was no easier or harder than the spin on type.

As above the torque setting of 15nm is on the cover plate and shouldnt be over tighthened or you will have trouble removing iot next time round and then end up damaging the filter body.

Did however find removing the paper element from the holder was slightly more messy a job as the metal spin on type can be held upright once undone to avoid any oil inside it pouring out..not the same with the paper type being on a shaft on the cap.

Sure after doing it a few times I will not thing about it further

Hi yes I agree, we have each type on our 2.2 & 2.6, and  either of them are easy to change...
