So the Firemen have gone on strike and in London they have walked away from what looks like a large fire in Dagenham (according to the BBC). ::)
I hope there are no injuries or fatalities as a result! :-\

That reminds me, if they're on strike, are they allowed to sit inside fire engines
eating take aways sheltering from the rain :-\
Surely, they're either on strike or not ::) and if they're on strike they should stand out in the pessing rain like the lemmings that they are >:(
-
I think if that were my business burning I would be suing that mouth-breather who heads the FBU. >:(
-
The fire was at a scrap yard in Dagenham, massive cloud of smoke and could easily see the flames from where Im working in Woolwich.
Anyone else think its odd it just happened to go up in smoke just beofre the firebrigade strike ???
Wonder how long there is left on the insurance policy??
Surely scrap yards don't just suddenly catch fire?? ::)

no "harm" to increase demand when you want to increase income in a capitalist system ::)

The fire brigade were called at 15.20 – some three hours before the strike.
Conspiracy theorists rest easy. ::) ::)

Plenty of under twenty fives out there with no work, get them trained up and on the latest contracts and carry out a cull of the leaches

Yep. :y

Reading todays Mail, (I know it's not healthy), I wonder if active Unite members could legally be considered vermin... >:(
Anyone want to contribute to a couple of pallets of tissues, baby oil and wet wipes to be publically delivered to the next TUC conference...
-
But to play devils advocate, I am not at all sure that a 60 year old fireman is up to rescuing people from burning buildings, whereas, for example, flying personnel in less active jobs are often forced to retire at 55 when their experience could well be used for a few more years. :-\ :-\ :-\
-
15/20 years down the line we'll supposedly have 60 year old firemen and 65 year old teachers. What will happen to them if they can't perform? Sacked and put on the dole till they are old enough to pick up their pension? Or maybe left in position to endanger life/ruin kids education?
Surely the fact that this government are making it harder to claim unfair dismissal and making people pay to go to tribunal has nothing to do with this situation can't be relevant?

Plenty of people find their chosen occupation doesn't suit them in later life for a variety of reasons. I have a friend who was a dentist until he contracted MS. :(
In a time where it's looking increasingly unlikely that most people will be adequately looked after by the state after a "normal" retirement I wonder how much support they will have for getting generous pensions from early retirement when most just have to accept a lower paid, less demanding job to see their career out. Especially when, by all accounts, most moonlight during their time as firemen.
-
We are all going to have to accept we are going to have to work longer. This is the price we are going to pay for living longer. The good news is that for the majority of people they are also enjoying good health to much older ages.
It is on the horizon, where the majority of us will live to 100 and maybe much more. Where birth rates are dropping below replacement rates in most Westernised countries, something is going to have to give in terms of workspan to build a pension pot, so we can enjoy our final years with reasonable financial security.
-
That is the reality of the situation. We all need to accept it,end of, imo.

yes.. but the main reason is the mistake of pushing them to choose a job at very young ages when they do know nothing about life and that particular job..
