Hello
After getting my new key from the locksmith, the key would not turn and the steering lock would not disengage. I had a look at the maintenance guides and decided the best way was to file some of those numbered brass bits. Instead of removing the whole ignition barrel, I simply removed the steering wheel housing, put a screwdriver in the lock and pulled the damn thing out. I have cleaned the thing, non of the brass bits are protruding and the key is in fine. The problem is I can't put the small barrel bit back in as it won't go in and when looking into the barrel there are some small springs that just sit there. I can not push it in no matter how hard I push and wiggle.
What do I do now?

If the steering lock has engaged, you will need to depress the spring loaded lug at the back of the housing. :y

Having just done mine I don't recall these. Can you take a pic and post it? :-\

Might I be so bold as to suggest that you neen to...
a) remove the remnants as per the guide
and
b) obtain a new barrel.
If you're lucky you won't have knackered the housing on the column :-\

Well after much poking and prodding nothing would work.
I simply removed the barrels and the grease from the cylinder using a hammer and screwdriver, and have decided to use a flat blade screwdriver to start the car which does the job just fine until I can get a proper new cylinder and keys.
I have the key fob which has the immobiliser chip in it which starts the car and it locks/closes the doors/boot. So its still secure even if someone breaks in wouldn't be able to take off with hit, hence not taping the chip to the barrel.
So I'm sorted now
Thanks!!! (wish I had done this before rather than spending all that time retrieving the missing piece of the key which didn't work anyway and getting a parking ticket in the process :'(

Silly design and if the car did not have an immobiliser then who knows....
Anyway what do I need now to replace everything?
I was thinking of just a new barrel and some keys.

And youve just posted on a public forum how to do the ignition barrell so some scum bag can give it ago and cost the owner of a car,loss of money,etc thats very clever,im just glad i keep 1 of my cars locked up in a garage......

what about broken glass from getting in car to begin with ;D ;D ;D :D :D :D :D

Oh and the transponder (immobiliser chip) is not in the fob, its in the horseshoe (key) ;)

First may be, second unlikely.
But mostly, you stand a fair chance of having knackered the housing on the steering column, so best budget for one of those too :-X
