Title: Rain sensor and specific windscreen
Post by: kcl on 07 November 2013, 13:02:18
It's always good to have plans for the future and I have thought of adding rain sensor to my car. I have read the how-to, also I do realize there is a sepcific windscreen for models with rain sensor but as I have recenlty renewed my "normal" windscreen I must ask for knowledge and/or opinions if I could still fit rain sensor and slightly modify the "normal" screen by paint/tape/window tint film/ something? In general, why does the sensor need the black part in screen? I think you could just put a piece of window tint film on the windscreen with suitable hole for the sensor? Why not?

Rain sensor type screen uses a different type of autodimming mirror, with different fitting than the earlier mirrors. Not sure if that would affect the possibility of fitting the sensor or getting it to work on other types of screen.I have the later screen, mirror and rain sensor on my year 2000 car,but Ive never wired the sensor in,as a lot of people who have them don't seem to like them.

When I looked into this, and never got around to doing it, I came up with the same conclusions as you.

The Rain Sensor Screen, as far as I could tell, simply hides the gubbins of the extended mirror holder, with the exception of the hole for the sensor of course.  :y

In general, why does the sensor need the black part in screen?

It is just an aesthetic aspect, otherwise you see the cables and housing.

Thanks  :y So, now to source the parts from "somewhere"... I assume I need mirror with foot to windscreen, some wiring, relay, cover for mirror (stalk without adjuster wheel I already have), anything else? Should I have some of the wiring already in the car as mine is MY2002 and came from factory without adjustable intermittent wipe?

Rain sensitive wipers still have an adjustment on the stalk.

Well they do on my Signum

To be honest they are not really worth having. They tend to have a mind of their own at times.

Only good thing is on the Vectra C/ Signum if you have the windows open with the key out of the ignition and it starts to rain then they auto close  :)

From memory fairly sure they dont on the Mig,
