Can anyone recommend a WiFi 3G dongle, that is PAYG but with decent download limit? Like 5gb or even unlimited?
-
Can't help I'm afraid, Tunnie. It's been a while since I've seen my dongle. :(
-
I used a 3 pay as you go dongle for a while with no problems. :y

Virgin did a PAYGO Sim where if you went the Data Max plan it gave you 99.9 Gb (Yes 99.9) per 30 days for a £10 top up, but been a while since Ive used that one, so things may have changed now.
It all depends what your trying to do with it, in terms of Data use, as there are some tricks out there to be had.
First off, two things to consider (forgetting about 4G for now), 1, only a proper PAYG Broadband Sim is going to give access to a decent through put on speed, ie on 3G HSDPA around 5 to 8 Mb download speeds and access to Laptop / Tethering use. 2, if using a PAYGO Voice Sim for Data use your speed will be limited to around 1.5 to 3 Mb speed and Tethering is not allowed and could be blocked after a while. The only exception is Vodafone who dont care if you Tether (its your data so do want you want with it attitude) hence why Vodafone dont offer any Unlimited Plans, the other it T Mobile, who dont allow Tethering but dont seem to enforce the policy. All the others can, will or do.
Probably one of the cheapest ways is a standard T mobile PAYGO Voice Sim, where you can get Unlimited Data for £20 for 6 months (these are the one you see on the Bay for up to £40), but its not unlimited, you get a 500mb per month fair use, so after that you can still surf but no Video downloads, these Sims you can get for free from T Mobile then just top up £20 and buy 6 months Data use (PM me for how to).
There are other ways but most start to get expensive when you hit or go over your data allowance, failing that its down to a 12 month Contract Sim of some description.

Things have changed so much I never use mine at all these days having Orange and Vodafone international dongles. BTWifi, Openzone and hotspots seem to have replaced these one fantastic little units. I do have a 3G sim in my ipad as back up.

Just get a T mobile unlimited contract phone and tether from it :y
3GB wouldn't last me a week ;D at £12.50 a pop you might as well have the contract phone for £36 per month... Sooo much cheaper :y

Wtf ??? Is tethering, dougal is a top magic roundabouter.

Your phone is put in Internet sharing mode and your laptop or whatever connects via wifi to the network provided by your phone.

All sounds interesting. When we go back to the Uk, all too frequently now that we have elderly relatives, we use a 3 dongle we purchased outright and buy SIMs off Amazon. Broadband Ready to Go 3GB/3 months Preloaded Data StandardSIM £20. We don't want a contract but do need to be able to watch catch up TV etc. We have a separate none contract UK 3 smart phone which gives us Skype for no money.
The T Mobile six month offer is in effect 3Gb if I read it correctly.

my only experience of them is a 3 dongle my mate got and it was so slow

7gb for about £25 if I remember correctly.

Thanks all. On my phone so will so will so a proper reply later.
Can't be a contract. Already have free business work phone. Trying to blag unlimited data on that to tether. Need it for VPNing, yes I know it will be crap, but it's as a backup for when I'm on call. Also needed for general web use
-
As you dont want a contract its 3 quid a month extra, but 3/4G tetherd on the One Plan with a mobile seems to make a lot more sense than a dongle. Plus you get the text and phone calls

Well did the rounds in Kingston town centre yesterday, Three,Voda,o2,EE,Phones4u ect, all their data plans, be it dongle, SIM only rolling contract ect, I thought were all mega expensive for what they are.
Maybe having my free work phone for last 4 years has adjusted my view, but even few years ago I was on better deals :-\
Decided instead to upgrade to full broadband inside the flat we are staying, crunching the numbers, this will be far cheaper and much much faster!
Just need to get permission from the owners, aka MrsT's parents :)

Thought the idea of the post was to go PAYG and not go down a Contract Route. ::) :)

Turns out contract cancelation costs, are less than PAYG... I can subscribe for couple of months, take the cancel hit and still be better off that PAY solutions offered.
Also on the blag at work for unlimited data on my works phone :)

Fair enough, maybe you could do a deal with them, they give you unlimited data and you stop stuffing there free doughnuts. ;D
-
If he's consuming excessive free doughnuts, they're not working. ;)
-
deal done, not quite unlimited but got both my iPad and iPhone SIMS upgraded with a shed load of data.
Tested VPN'ing in via WiFi hotspot on the iPhone, works well enough for me. So won't bother now to do anything permanent :)

Probably burning most of them off, whilst running about looking for free WiFi Hotspots, ;)
