Went to
Clacton Cracktown on sea today, coming back about 5pm just going down a fast left hander onto the slip road to the A120 and the steering felt very heavy. Swmbo then pointed out the red light on the dash (battery not charging) and the temp gauge quickly shot of the scale.
Borrocks ,I thought, aux belt has snapped. Drove on for about a mile until I found a layby, lifted the bonnet and sure enough I could see various bits of belt hanging off pulleys.
Called green flag, who turned up in half an hour and drove the Mig onto the back of the recovery truck. The first time Ive ever had to do that in my life. Took a while to get home as the A12 was completely blocked due to an accident, but got home at 7pm.
Had an important meeting to go to tonight,so hung a torch on the underside of the bonnet and got the tools out. It turns out the tensioner pulley and bearing had collapsed and disintegrated allowing the belt to escape captivity and shred itself all over the engine bay.
Had a spare belt and tensioner pulley in the shed so proceeded to change them. Due to the only light being the torch hanging from the bonnet it took almost 2 hours. Had to get it up and running as I have to go to work at 6.45 am in the morning, and both my other cars are currently unroadworthy. ::) Got to the meeting just as it finished, but the car seems to be running fine with no apparent damage. ::)
An interesting evening to say the least. :)

What was the smell like Albs? When bear's cambelt went..... mmm nauseating burned rubber :'(
-
No smell, no noisy bearing, no warning.Just went suddenly. A smell of boiling coolant when I lifted the bonnet but that was it. :-\

I had a ping ping sound underneath the car , must have been the remains of the pulley wheel :o Breakdown man said "yep thats your cam belt snapped" ???

Still a really good turn around on your part with the repair.
Should have known you'd have a spare ;)

Was that the one I saw advertised on mercedes190.co.uk in London going for absolute buttons??? if so you jammy b*stard ;D I just missed it :'(

Yes. :P ;D................it was slightly misdescribed though. The car isn't a cat D its a cat C and the alloys he put on it are the scabbiest set of alloys Ive ever seen. He also said one trye was near the limit, which is true. He didn't menton another one is way below the limit and the other two have punctures. ;D ;D
Ive refurbed two of the alloys so far,and bought two tyres yesterday for £27, so not the end of the world. I Ive have been in touch and had words. Told him I will call in for a chat next time Im down that way. ;D
Still a bargain though, just not quite as good a bargain as he made out. ;)

Seems to be running ok ,but I will keep an eye on it for a while. If the HG are gone I will be advertising yet another Omega as breaking for parts. ;D

exactly what happened to goldie the elite of my two omegas, the tensioner siezed and missis drove till it stopped, partly caused by shards of belt got into the cambelt case making it jump teeth, been ok since its half rebuild, still cant work out how it only bent 2 valves, glad to hear yours wasnt as drastic

Last time I was recovered was when the crank sensor died. Had a choice of waiting for 2 hours for a flat-bed or be towed home on a bar, so I chose the bar. As the car started when the engine was cold I refrained from starting it until I needed the power steering to get around tight mini-roundabouts. I then switched it off to position 1 again.
Up a particularly long steep hill on a bypass, the AA van started to struggle with the weight of the Omega behind it and was knocked down to about 25mph, so I fired up the engine and........ gave him a little push. It's fair to say he was not happy. ::) ::)
