Title: Terraclean?
Post by: Dan282 on 25 November 2013, 17:17:46
I've never been a fan of engine additives for claimed miracle cures.  After watching an episode of wheeler dealers I saw the terraclean discarbonising treatment advert with Ed China.

I've read through their website and wondered what other members make of it?

I'm in 2 minds if it will actually be a benefit or if it's just another glossy advert for something that isn't necessary.

I think Omegaman on here has had that done  ;)

I spoke to them at this years NEC as several ABS LC owners are thinking of getting it done. It is not an addative but a special fuel that is put in in place of your normal fuel for the "clean"

It's a pure fuel they run for a while to clean crap from the engine.  Sounds very good, cost is reasonable - IF it makes a difference.

A mate has a jagx350 petrol with 197k he had it done a couple of months ago and said it works a treat, says he feels it in the power delivery most.

What sort of cost is it as it does sound like it works.

Cataclean the stuff I've used twice now in the 3.2 seems to idle a little better and mpg was a little more.. No idea on emissions haven't had an MOT done yet since I starred using Cataclean every three months. Will try to remember the readout when the MOT is due around May..

Far from convinced here, any benefits would be short lived as even if it did remove (what little) carbon is present  then it would soon return. If it was a shitty old yank engine from the 80's and 90's then yes, could have more of an impact.

You would be better using the cash to get your injectors cleaned.

That's the other thing I was thinking off. Seems a few people have opted for that instead of terraclean.

What's the best way to clean the injectors then?   My emissions on the MOT 3 weeks ago showed them either hardly registering or bang in the middle of the range.

In my case, is it best to leave things alone as they are not "broken" or do it anyway?  :-\

What's the best way to clean the injectors then?

Take them off the car, check flow rate and pattern, ultrasonic cleaning bath then check flow rate and pattern again. This way you know they are performing to spec, and know if you've made any difference. Any that don't perform afterwards you can replace.

Squirting fluid in on the engine as with Terraclean is only going to clean the injectors anyway, as a modern engine won't accumulate any significant carbon deposits, as said, and the fluid doesn't go anywhere other than the fuel rail and injectors, so it can't clean anything else.

For the cost of a Terraclean you can get a set of injectors cleaned properly and have change for a night out. No brainer. Not that injectors get that badly clogged unless they've sat in a breaker's yard for years, IME.

Thanks Kevin, makes sense what you say :y

So is it worth cleaning them as nothing appears to be wrong with them, or clean them anyway?  :-\

Modern clean fuels we are using, and indeed have been the norm for many years now, wont produce the carbon build up that was normal 30 years ago. So the use of these so called miracal cleaning addatives are no more than marketing spiel, for the chavs and boy racers who belive it will make their corsa do 200mph. ::)

Back to the original post, I hadn't heard of Terraclean till this post, Just been looking it up and sounds good, Found this post on another forum i'm with, This person had a VX Cavalier done Link (http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=266518) He seems to have had a good overall experience having this done, Just wondering would mine benefit from it seen as it has 191k on the clock or any mileage cars.. Left us know how it goes if you decide to go through with it..  :)
