Title: First I thought it was the exhaust, and then a wheel bearing.............
Post by: Vamps on 29 November 2013, 20:41:25
Called in to my local 'indy' to see if the Jeep was fixed, still handbrake and slow puncture to sort, get it back tomorrow; no problem.

Re the vibration / noise that I likened to a wheel bearing........ ::) ::) :-[

I was shown what looked like a brake drum, but even heavier, had come off, and been rattling around on the prop shaft, prop goes through the middle, apparently it is, or is part of, a vibration damper, expensive but probably not needed - Can anyone confirm what this is and is it essential, assuming it drives without vibration, which it was even when this was rattling around the prop............. :-\ :-\ :-\

On the Omega it also offers a degree of protection to the front donut coupling...

On the Jeep, how essential it is depends on how fragile the transmission is... ie will it shake itself to bits without it :-\

Thanks....... :y  Remaining confused though, anyone know what they are called, searching seems to come up with Harmonic Damper which is on the front of the engine or some form of rubberised coupling on the prop shaft, my bit had to have the propshaft dropped to get it off as it went through the centre, no bolt holes, is I said looks like a brake drum; in fact when I first saw it I thought prop handbrake - which has also failed......feeling confused...... ::) ::)

Torsional vibration damper .. bit like this? http://www.wranglerforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=522538&stc=1&d=1384750634

(Although that's a Wrangler, not a fat Jeep)

There will be no parts on that vehicle which are 'not needed' unless they have been paid for as an option.

Thanks, getting a better understanding of this now. The flexible coupling is still intact this outer casing has come adrift and there are 2 others as well........ ::) ::)

Main thing is Jeep is drivable for the moment till I track down a new part, hand brake now sorted, a pig of a job apparently........ ;) ;)

I will ignore the Fat Jeep comment......... :P :P :D
