Title: Depressing MOT failure.
Post by: albitz on 04 December 2013, 23:07:58
Not the Omega, the Merc 190D
Failed on leaking metal fuel pipe which looks a pita to change, particularily at this time of year with no garage.
Also failed on seized balljoints, a common problem with them. No big deal I thought,I can change balljoints with my eyes closed.
Not these ones I cant. Standard method is to acquire expensive MB tools to remove and press them back in, in situ. Other method is to remove the wishbones and press them in/ out with a big press. Problem is the front springs cant be compressed with normal compressors, they need a special Merc type of compressor which are at least £100.
What to do ? I hate cars sometimes. ::)

You are lucky that you still have the front suspension still attached to the car then.  ;D

Nah, at that age of Merc its not such an issue, its mid 90s and the 00's where they rot faster than an SD1

You're not wrong there, mine's dissolving as I type....  :'(

When I sell it, I'll advertise it as an authentic late 1990's Mercedes Benz complete with an ongoing self modification feature!  :D  ;)

Sad it turned out to have some issues, sure someone on the 190 forum has the spring tools. Failing that send it down to me as I liked the look of it originally.  ;)

I thought that all Merc's had a 'built from granite' reputation.

I have just read about a diy way to remove/ refit the balljoints using a jack, a hacksaw and a 36 mm socket - invented by an Irishman of course. I think that's the route I will be going down. It might end in tears, but hey ho.  ;D

Where there is a will there is a way, a challenge to be overcome - at least it is not you daily car so you have plenty time to find a way, good luck.......... :y :y
