Yesterday I started to get a shudder whilst pulling away in first gear or reverse. I planned to check the oil level tonight but things got worse on my way to work this morning. I'm now getting a shudder all the time, at all revs in all gears :o.
When I parked at work (10 mins commute), I could smell a burnt smell.
Is my transmission shot?
There's a garage right next to work, if I bring it there and they top up the oil, will it fix it or am I wasting their time and my money?

As Dan says check oil first,make sure its hot with engine running in park when its checked :y

I spoke to my dad who's a bit of an expert in auto boxes and he thinks the burnt smell probably means a new gearbox is needed.
Does any member have an AR35 (3.0 V6 engine) in good nick for sale?
How many hours labour am I likely to face for the fitting with a garage?

Change the oil first ;)
For comparison, I was charged £200 to replace a rear crank shaft oil seal which obviously requires removal of the gearbox.

Before you even change the oil, check the level for starters
I'd hate you to put 6+litres new ATF in to a knackered box...

Indeed ..... I meant 'Check oil' ..... not change oil ;)

just came out of the garage, and my car has an engine misfire.
It looks like the coil pack or leads failed progressively, making it look like converter shudder at low rpm.
Before they looked at the car, they quoted 4-5 hours labour for a box swap.

Was just going to say coil pack , had the same symptoms on previous car ;) Half an hour to change coil pack .

Still takes me ages to swap out a coil pack ;D but I do like to take my time ;)

Aye , they should have installed it in the glove box , would have been much easier ;D

garage was keener to do a transmission swap than a coil swap, it's such a faff working on those engines...
I recon 2 hours to do the coils, I can do a rocker cover in 2.5h (i've had lots of practice ::))

I really have no Idea how long it should take. But I do think it's easier to take the plenum off AND the inlets as you can sneak round the side of the engine lift eye :y
