Title: Zafira problem
Post by: Rods2 on 12 December 2013, 21:43:51
My daughter has a 2007 1.8 petrol which has done 56k.
There is a whining sound when the car in moving, that is getting louder. Is it possibly a gearbox problem, cv joint or the beginning of a failing wheel bearing?

Likely a wheel bearing... the 1.8 doesn't produce enough torque to break anything :y

Get the car nice and warm, jack the wheels in turn and spin them. Listen/feel for any roughness or tightspots :y

Also take the car up to about 50mph and knock it into neutral and see if the noise is still there,if its gone its probably drivetrain related,if its still there try gently weaving side to side and see if loading the bearings makes it worse :y

Edit don't do the neutral bit if its auto :y

I can vouch for that.

No real issues with those gearboxes and the wheel bearings are pretty reliable, its also worth swapping tyres front\rear to rule them out

Caliper/disc off, then four bolts :y

Worth checking caliper function too, as binding can cook the hub causing premature failure... suffered that at 25k on my first Vectra C. Nsr would be a good place to start :y
