Title: Lidl. Excellent (food) value
Post by: I_want_an_Omega on 14 December 2013, 21:05:43
We have just devoured some Lidl BBQ Pork ribs for dinner.

Splashed out on a pack each @ £1.49 per pack. 30 mins in the oven & jobs done.

Yes, I've had better - but as far as VFM goes you really cant beat that.  :y

Haven't had them(BBQ ribs) for ages. I could eat them til they come out of my ears.....lovely.

I felt a bit peckish  earlier, even though I had a biggish tea  :-[, so went for a doner kebab. Decided that pitta bread goes a bit soggy with the chilli sauce so had a doner nan instead, £4.50. He brought it out in a pizza box and handed it to me, it weighed a fickin ton. Got it home and opened the box........mahoosive!
I've had a go, wife has had a pick, doggie ate some (meat?) and I've thrown half of it in the bin. Now that's VFM  ;D

I love the BBQ ribs that come vaccum packs, £2.99 usually. You got me wanting the local full house donner now, comes with 2 chicken breasts and a couple of lamb steaks and more donner than I can handle, all smothered in chilli and tahini.........wheres my car keys ;)

Lidl and Aldi are the up and coming supermarkets. ;D We use them far more than Tesco, who have lost their way.  :-[

I did my own for Friday dinner. Two racks of baby back pork ribs slow roast for 3 hours covered in marinade and a further 40 minutes in the oven..... accompanied with home made chips and onion rings BEAUTIFUL. :y :y :y

It cost more to make the batter for the onion rings than the £1.49 you paid for the ribs and a lot longer to cook ;D ;D ;D

H went shopping yesterday. Couldn't find a joint of meat for less than £17 apparently.

I don't the she tried Aldi or Lidl.

I don't suppose the farmers are benefitting from the price rises either.

Do you not have a proper butchers shop where you live?
A tenner gets us a joint of beef that will feed 4 and still have enough left over to make sandwiches for the kids the next day from our local butcher.

I can understand your amusement as small local shops are definitely a dying breed, but the difference in quality between the supermarket crap and a proper butchers is immediately noticeable when you eat it (as is the price).

Yep, could have been a good source of cheap meat recently, with all these people having to sell their horses due to the recession!  ;)

I don't see how a horse is any different to a cow or a sheep, or even a dog.

I'm sure that they're all as tasty as each other if properly cooked. :)

We're far too squeamish about meat in this country.  ::)

Rabbit is another one that should be used more and would/should be cheap as chips, because they breed like...  ;)

I agree  :y
Sometimes a bit of trial and error to find a butchers that you like.....and at the price you like.
Also when you cook it......if sausages/burgers/bacon/mince.....far less fat (water if bacon) comes out of sausages/burgers/mince when cooking  :y

And I like the chilli and hog roast sausages from the butchers i go to  :y

He even had a deal on one day last week.....buy a pound and get a pound free  :y

The boneless pork chops i buy of him taste great  :y
