Got 5 miles from home, heater went stone cold, lost power and wont idle, seems like head gasket went :(
-
TB would probably suggest checking the inlet for water leaks first. ...?
-
That was my 1st port of call, car has been fine no coolant loss at all, will start stripping it down next week end.
-
Too late, if you let the heater go cold, the HG has gone. End of.
Its likely to have been a leak originally, that allowed the coolant to drop, and this then pops the HG.

Rover has died :'( Cabby to the rescue :y
-
And if its a 25/45 with plastic intake, its very likely to have been the green inlet gasket that caused the leak.

I'd rather walk.

Never lost any coolant, only checked it friday night before leaving home,i shall start stripping it down over the next week, order new gasket set and bolts and find somewhere local that does head skimming.

I suspect it had developed a leak ;). IME, and after talking to some of the powertrain guys, they don't just fail in Rover applications.
I got away without skimming mine, but she knew to stop driving it as soon as it started to miss (about 3 miles after the heaters went), as we'd been joking that it was overdue a HG ;D

Mine lasted 12yrs and 116k. Although did have a new HG at 72k.
A fine car, would still be here if it hadn't been the rag doll in a multi car pile up :'(. A strong little car as well, hence I survived to tell the tale :D
