Title: knocking / clunking sound
Post by: darrenfos on 20 December 2013, 18:56:04
hi all regarding the omega (2001 elite manual estate) there is a knocking or clunking noise from underneath at the front somewhere when i had a look there's nothing loose or out of place, seems to drive ok no wobble or pulling it seems to be quieter as speed increases at first i thought it was engine tray or something that's what it sounds like, its a bit strange. Had its tracking done when all 4 tyres were replaced about a month ago. the noise was there before that though. :)

I would suspect your droplinks are knakard :)

You can get the front wheels off the ground and then put a bar under the anti-roll bar near the drop link and lever it up. You will clearly see if there is play in the drop link ball joints. I use my trolley jack handle for this.

They recently jumped up, used to be a very reasonable £15 or so each, think they are quite a bit more now  :(

Some of us have experimented with pattern, I got MeyleHD ones. As some people here recommended them, have to say they are well made, very solid compared to GM's.

Been on around a year or so now, time will tell but no complaints so far  :y

These are the ones I bought:

http://www.allgermanparts.co.uk/ourshop/prod_2034029-Front-anti-roll-bar-link-Meyle-HD-version-4-year-warranty-616-060-5575HD.html (http://www.allgermanparts.co.uk/ourshop/prod_2034029-Front-anti-roll-bar-link-Meyle-HD-version-4-year-warranty-616-060-5575HD.html)

Like I say, impressively made (4 year warrenty), considering GM were a similar price but time will tell  :y

If the car is on level ground you can just reach under and grab the roll bar nearest the drop link ball joint, and pull up and down. You'll feel the play in your hand.

The car MUST be level to check by hand though, because if the roll bar is loaded up, jacked in one side for example, then the roll bar will be twisted and all the play will be taken up by the torsion off the roll bar, and you'll never shift it.

Lemforder, Merle seem ok, or Gm give good results. I wouldn't go for anything cheaper personally, but each to their own, as they say.

If its not drop links, loom for knackered wishbone bushes allowing the wishbone to knock on the subframe. But it would handle shite if it was those.

Don't know, missed that one if he did. Were the issues with allgerman or Meyle?  :-\

If they last a few more years I'd be happy  :y

Roll bar you want, gives the play over both ball joints then, where as grabbing the drop link only gives the play on the top ball joint.

...er, although, there's play, so replace. :y :)
