Evening all. :), Last week I heard a type of squealing/screeching sound coming from the engine at hard acceleration coming out of a roundabout only lasted a few seconds at high RPM (I really shouldn't let boy racers get to me), Also a smell of rubber coming through the vents briefly, It's probably because the heated seats on, heater on, lights on etc.. More strain on the Aux belt/alternator so it slipped a little ? That's what my mate thinks anyways,
That was last week, It Hasn't done this since, Then again I've been driving like miss daisy since then mostly :-X ;D , But on the occasional acceleration not as hard mind it hasn't made any such noise/smell since, Maybe those electrical gadgets are the culprit, I'd have thought the car could take it though. She's not going to be used for a week or two now so i'll see how everything behaves again then.
Probably nothing but thought I'd mention this in case others have had similar issues ?
If I don't get a chance to say before Christmas..
I wish everyone at OOF a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year... :y

Jay - check your aux belt tensioner bearing - same symptoms before mine melted as bearing seized ;)

Had a brand new tensioner and pully and Aux belt in summer (genuine VX) including a refurbd alternator, It's silent at idle and when revved stationery, Is it possible the high demand from the alternator was the cause ???

How's the cam belt history?
But yes, check the aux. belt as well. Look for any rubber shavings near the pulleys. It shouldn't slip if the tensioner is OK, but it could have been contaminated with oil, perhaps?
-
It could be any component on the aux run. Water pump, pas pump, ac pump as well.
I'd wip the belt off and check the pulleys on each, spinning by hand for free smooth bearings with no play.
Examine the belt too, see of its slipped or melted anywhere.
Theres a member here with a 3.2 that had an aux belt jump off and take the cam belt with it. So keep an eye on it. :o

I'll add that the only other time I heard that exact same sound was just before the alternator went.. But I can't believe it's gone already. Surely not. :-\
Aye would be worth checking the bearings on all Aux turns. But wouldn't there be a constant noise though ?, Plus it's been fine for a week driving normally, Don't really want to risk flooring it again to see what happens or it might be the last time or it might be fine :-X
Cam belt, Id have to check paper work but i think it was done around 168k and there's 191k now, Checked the belt and that in the summer it's genuine GM all looked in order, No Cracks or anything amiss..

It is possible that some wd40 could have found its way onto the belt a while ago though, Not sure about oil, I'll have a better look when it's not mad out there. Still got strong wind and rain here :(
I'll also take a few snap shots.

This was the day the Alternator light came on (July 2013) I shortly after that got it refurbished... The exact same sound in this video below was heard last week, Maybe not as bad but same screech don't know what else you could call that sound, You can just about hear the noise before it changes into 2nd gear at higher rpm. Link To Video (http://youtu.be/_ujKANJE7V4) .. Come to think about it I've only heard this noise twice and both times in 1st gear..
-
Never heard anything like that before, traditional belt screech as I know it is much higher pitched than that.
Interested to see what others say. :(

There's 6 or 7 changes in tone there in the space of a second or so. Its more like a bearing. To me :-\
-
Yep same here Chris never heard anything like that myself before then, The only thing that lit up a warning light after that was the battery light and it was ideling rough when I got home and the interior lights where pulsating to the rev pattern...
It's ideling very level (to me anyway) currently and drives fine, No power issues of any kind, But seen as (just after) that sound in the video in July the battery light came on and it turned out to be the alternator, Got it refurbished and refitted then everything was back to normal. Been sound and as far as I know still is.
Another thing, Last week when it made that sound (again) it had been standing a week pretty much and some 35miles from home coming out of a roundabout I accelerated fairly hard not completely down and it made that sound, I then leveled off just cruising 65mph say. But I did have the odd spurt here and there, There was no noise or smell whatsoever again and this last weekend it was fine... The day this happened once I got home I had a quick look nothing looked out of place or damaged at a glance around 4:30pm..
Weather is against me at the moment to inspect further. I'd like to check if it's charging the battery for starters..
Oh They Joys of Omega Ownership :D

Thats a weird noise :o

Diff pinion bearing with a bit too much torque going through it :-\ especially if it only happens when you plant the throttle in a low gear...

That noise definitely came from the front, Would the diff cause that burning rubber smell ?
If it is the diff, Is it a serious problem, I know it ain't a good problem but what sort of damage is being caused long term when it's making that sound and when it isn't making that sound, Lastly is it an easy/cheap job to fix or would a replacement diff be in order..
To rule this out being a 1st gear only problem would it be okay to try flooring it again from standstill and say at 60mph, I don't even know if it will even make this sound again either to be honest. It's only produced this noise twice and I can assure you I have flooredc it many times since July / December.
