right here goes.
father christmas bought icklle griffin a 7" tablet,so we now need to go wireless,
i'am looking for somthing to do that job,and dont want to pay a fourtune,our provider is virgin so its cable.
nice simple answers,dont need full geeky,techy mode answer. :-X better still if somebody lokal has a s/h for sale.

If you have the Virgin Media Superhub, then you already have wireless capability.
If you don't have a Superhub, ring them and they will give you one for free.
Alternatively, something like this will do you

No, but if the routers you have were intended for a DSL line then they will be of no use to the OP.

If you dont need the speed....I have a Netgear Prosafe 54g access point...which would connect to your Virgin modem....it would be ok for surfing and email etc, just not suitable for streaming media.

Spent half of Christmas day trying to get one of those rather things to play ball.
Don't expect it to work with firmware that it's shipped with. >:(

On an allied topic, Santa brought me a YouView box, which I am happy with but apparently I need an Internet connection to be able to watch past programmes. How do I go about this? I have a BT Voyager modem for my computer, but I need something posher, yes?
Also, as I am on a BT Basic tariff, will downloading previously broadcast programmes go way over my download allowance and cost me a pension-breaking amount of money?Thanks in advance for your help, folks, and a happy New Year to all.

Also, as I am on a BT Basic tariff, will downloading previously broadcast programmes go way over my download allowance and cost me a pension-breaking amount of money?
Depends how much they charge you per GB of data for going over as to whether it'll break the bank, but streaming content (including "Catch Up" TV) will certainly push your data consumption up.

If it's if any help - I use Youview a lot and my monthly data usage is about 80Gb. Suggest you get an unlimited package from BT otherwise you will get hammered :y

just phoned virgin, and spoke to an oprative, and the "engineer" will be calling next year with a shinney new wireless modem/router. :y foc even better..
as my modem is a bit erm old. ::)

Just got home from work,and there's a nice shiney new "virgin super 2" glowing and flashing blue lights..
new stufff,haven't checked the speeds yet,. :)

Just used one of them online speed checkers. Got 16.1mb down and 1.1mb up speed. that do as don't do games or movies. ;D

Online speed tests are generally "massaged", if you want a real life test then download the network install version of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and see what you get in the "real" world (use a proper network monitor, the Windows estimate of what you are getting is just that....an estimate.

That doesn't stop you from downloading the file to see the real speeds you are getting.

We have the 30meg package. The 2 should give you two networks VMblah2G and 5G. I find 2G gives about 15meg a second at range/out of the room, but 5G gives double that at 32meg.
its rock steady all day long too. Brilliant, ime.

VM finally caved to the indisputable fact that the original Superdud is flawed by the physical hardware, a Superdud 2 is available to anyone that has the original for free.
