Well as work had quitened off today and weather dry decided to replace the doddgy thermostat on my 3.2 Elite.
After the usual vast amount of removing bits to get to the culprit eventually got it out along with managing to seperate the coolant pipe from stat body, despite having new pipe just incase.
Thought not too bad a job so decided to get things back together as had time today...3 hours later and despite my best efforts I cant get that B bolt to go back in.Can get it to locate fine with just the coolant pipe bracket and dipstick tube but when trying to fit the engine lifting tag I cannot get that bolt to pass through all 3 bits and locate into the head.I have tried pushing a thin drift through but still cannot get it to go through the 3 bits so somehow lifting tag isnt aligning properly.Really dont remember this much grief on my 2.5 when I did that but this is just silly. The lifting tag has a smaller hole below B bolt and also a curved plate at the end.Does this locate into a slot on the head area to get it all aligned ?
Have decided to call it a day today and may go for another attempt on Monday now but would appreciate any advise as to how this aligns.
As an aside whilst having alook around the top of the engine noticed that somebody before my ownership had been at the oil cooler maybe replacing it or sealing a new plate. On the N/S the middle plate bolt is "Missing" and had feared the bolt had been sheared off.On closer inspection hole was full of much but no evidence of a coolant leak so hopefully the 2 bolts on that side and the sealant are doing the job.Question is should I replace the bolt as have ran a tap into the hole and now its clean the thread seems to be sound just worried that I may crack the sealant if I now fit a bolt as remember the cooler goo goes brittle .Dont like the knowledge of a bolt missing but worried I may cause problems if I touch things there
Again any advise greatly appreciated

Are the bolts all the same length?

Chris.
I replaced the thermostat housing with original bolts as thickness of flange the same.B bolt is that which was removed so it came out !! but just can seem to get engine lifting tag in correct position to get bolt to go through it.I know it is nearly correct as without lifting tag B bolt goes in without issues.
Oil cooler TIS says bolts are M8 x 25 so will have a looksie in spares to see if I can find another..just wanted advise about refitting the missing one or should I leave it alone as nothing is leaking

I know what your going through mate, had the very same issue with my 30 ltr. After much flesh removal from knuckles lots of choice words >:( and 3 attempts over 2 days. I admitted defeat. I took the bloody engine lift bracket and launched into the Grand Union Canal :-X Then I got a bush +washer little bit thicker than that poxy bracket and fitted it in 2 minutes. It's perfect to this day :y

Suppose it really depends on how many times you plan to lift the Engine out?, or more to the point whether you will be lifting it out or someone else. :)
But Im guessing Amba will wont it to be perfect. ;)

I replaced mine with a normal hex-head bolt, which increases the options to fit it. You know, 1/4 or 3/8 drive socket, with different extensions or spanners.
-
Mine popped straight back in ;D
But if it's any consolation it took nearly half an hour to refit TBs when we were trying failing to remove his dipstick ::)

From memory.... the lifting eye has a finger that goes into a blind/untapped hole beneath the threaded hole for the B-bolt.
To fit the lifting eye the finger has to be inserted in the hole (with the lifting eye horizontal) then the eye can be rotated and slid up behind the other two brackets.

That rings a bell Andy :y

Original B bolt removed with a E14 short socket on 3/8 small ratchet which came out quite simply after relocating PAS reservoir and tying wiring loom out of the way.Plenty of space to get at and also amazed that the actual Bbolt was even visible unlike the 2.5 which was just done by feel :(
Rest of job went to plan ,but its getting the damn thing back.If the engine lifting tag was on there originally it will be going back on one way or the other as yes I do like things just so ::)
Problem I am having is ,getting the bolt through coolant pipe lug with little eyelet on dipstick is ok,but then just cant get the thing through lifting tag even when pulling it away slightly from head cant see the threaded part visible so know its not aligning properly.Assume the lifting tag locates on a slot in head like that on old 2.5 so will re-group and have another attempt now probably on Monday now as going to work tomorrow as need a rest ;D
Still would welcome advise on missing bolt from oil cooler plate I found....should I get another and replace it ?? or leaving it as nothing seems to be leaking.
Will probably need couple of M8 X 25 bolt if anybody has one spare as my stock cupboard hasnt turned one up.

Yes Andy the lifting eye does have a flat 90 degree tongue on the end which I assume fits into a recess in head.
Old 2.5 had a little spike thing which pushed into a hole I imagine in the head but the set up on the 3.2 is different and whilst the bolt has less bits to go through it seems odd why it is so akward-even nasty,as I have got fair visibility on what I am doing and did have the advantage of doing the job before
Will try removing lifting tag again and re- fitting it horizontal with eye cap facing back of enging then rotating to horizontal to see if it locates into "something " ;)

On my 3.2 there are 2 'B' bolts. One bolt goes through an angle bracket, then through the transfer pipe and lifting bracket. The dipstick is held by a bolt which goes in to the threaded angle bracket. I remember this well as I lost the angle bracket and had to buy a new one. ::) :y
I feel your pain as the lifting bracket acts the arse just when you think it's all in line. :)

Yes that is identical to what I am confronetd with and can see both bolts and bracket quite clearly
Think I may have now formulated a plan which I will try on Monday assuming I get chance to have another go.
I am going to slacken off the bottom of the 2 bolts which hopefully will give the first eyelet on the dipstick part a bit more slck and allow it to move and hopefully align with the hole in the coolant pipe. That way I should be able to then get more movement on the last part of the alignmet and with any luck get the B bolt through the engine lifting eye ,but still using AndyB,s advise of rotating to get it aligned.
Think it might be its just all to tight and not allowing me to move things about...can always nip up the bottom bolt once the other is engaged properly.
Fingers crossed my plan works ;D
Any advise on oil cooler plate missing bolt ??
-
...
but still using AndyB,s advise of rotating to get it aligned.....
Andy H ;) ;) ;)

Sorry but got my " H " and my " B " confussed. :D :D :D
Probably a symptom of the B Bolt ;D
