Hi all! :)
I need a new alternator for my 2000 2.5 V6 and have a couple of queries.
I've seen several alternators listed for models up to 1999, but would it fit my 2000 face lift? As far as I know its the same engine, X25XE... :-\
Is there any value in fitting a bigger alternator? I think the 3.2 has a 140amp as opposed to 120amp for the 2.5. :-\
Thanks! :y
-
I would have thought it depended on Spec rather than engine size... after all a 2.5 Elite has all the electrical kit a 3.0 does ::)
Variation might be with the connections or pulley size :-\
-
Ah good point didn't think about the pulley size. i assumed they'd be the same size and basically in the same casing. :-\
-
I would imagine that any V6 alternator would fit any other V6 as long as the plug is the same :-\ and as has been said the elite and plods will have higher output. :y

I fixed my alternator last year (august 2012). I replaced everything, diodes and the voltage regulator and it works brilliantly.
I didn't have to replace diodes, but I did. It cost me £90, but I remember the voltage regulator was around £45.
They quoted me £250 for a new (read: refurbed) alternator so this means my alternator is now worth £250 :P
It's 120 amps.

Which, on exchange of the old one, you would of had a refund, no?
Making total cost of a new alternator about £110 odd. Iirc. Although there may have been a price increase since.
Just make sure they give you the right one. As the 3.0 doesn't fit. Spades are too wide and there not enough slack in the loom to the terminals.

I heard of it, but I don't remember anybody telling me about the refund there and then. Still £20 cheaper and now I know how to fix'em :P :D

You forgot to do the guide for other members then? ;)

Yes and I regret it. I think I might have some pics somewhere.

Reckon that's enough. Got part numbers for diode and reg? :)

I should have the packaging somewhere. If I find it I'll post it.

Eurocarparts do a Lucas alternator which is about £250 but you get a refund when you send your old one back and it works out at £128.
I've found a couple of companies on ebay selling refurbed alternators for £60-70 with no exchange which seems like the way to go to me as they also give 12 months warranty. :)
Then of course there's the scrappy route where they can be had for £30 or so, but might have done as many miles as my old one! :-\
-
Scrappy and refurb it could be the way forward... refurb old one once out, and even if they only last a year you're never stuck without :y
-
This is the one I think I'll get, as I need to get one to whack straight in to get mobile again. ::)

Might have a go at refurbing the old one though. :y
-
Beware because a lot of people are using cheap Chinese components to refurbish them. I know I've got genuine Bosch parts.
Even that £60 could be a waste on money.

That's a fair point zYx, but I still reckon that with a 12 month warranty it's a better bet than an unknown quantity from the scrappy. ;)
-
I'm sure it'll be fine. 12 month warranty should cover you.
-
The only thing that fails on the uber reliable 2.5/3.0 alternators is the regulator, and thats cheap and easy to swap.
The bearings can get noisey with time/pressure washing but again, its about 10-12 pounds for good bits and an hour to change.
-
I had a another think about fixing my alternator but as it's done 215000 miles I'm sure the bearings will need doing as well, and as I want to be 100% sure that whatever goes back in works, I chickened out and ordered a reconditioned one. :-[ ;D
I'll have a go with the old one at some stage though and found this company for the bits. :y
