Title: Holden to die
Post by: BazaJT on 25 January 2014, 19:36:36
I read that GM are to kill off the Holden brand by 2017.The replacement for which will be an as yet unspecified GM model with FWD.However as part of the same announcement GM say that it intends to make Chevrolet a global brand[like Ford,B.M.W.etc.]so all GM vehicles would become Chevrolets, but they go on to say that as a brand they're pulling the Chevrolets out of Europe!!?As and when Holden production ceases the only cars then produced in Australia would be Toyota, and it's by no means certain they can maintain Aussie production.

I was looking at these but they were £4000 out of reach and I was worried about insurance.

Too young for a Merc, BMWs self destruct in front of you, so bought an off roader.

They might shift production to the US for the VF/WM chassis for two reasons...

1. The Impala is only half the car that the Caprice is, especially for Plod use.

2. South America, particularly Brazil is still a growing economy, and the Chevrolet Omega sells well there.

Could mean some respite, but expect LHD only, unless GM build RHD Chevrolet SS for Oz, NZ and us.

Building a single global brand to US/Euro standards should be enough to allow any given vehicle to be sold anywhere in the world. If it works for VW/Audi/BMW and Mercedes then why not Chevrolet :-\

Sure, Vauxhall/Opel are historically important, but would it not be better to be part of a global network, selling British built models globally, than to have no part in it?

I would like to think it possible to be able to order a 3.6 lpg Omega Estate from my local dealer at a sensible otr price, possibly plus delivery, in the same way that someone in Hawaii would be able to order an Astra VXR on the same terms...

Sure, buying a locally made Chevrolet model will be cheaper because delivery is cheaper, and lead times will be alot shorter, but I am confident that people will choose and buy cars which tick all their boxes, regardless of where they are made, as they do already ::)

I'll put good money on them using Vauxhall as an excuse to keep the brand alive... 'If the Pommes can do it, so can we...' ::)

Maybe GM Australia will brand the cars imported from Korea 'Holwoo'  :)
