Had a go at PCworld and Asus regarding a colleague's Asus X202E. You cannot remove battery from these.
Basically when you disconnect power lead the screen goes off and yet there is plenty of power and green lights are still on showing all components other than screen are working. Proof is that after disconnecting power for a time you can reconnect and it does not need to reboot.
Started it in bios mode and screen stays on even without power lead so it is only when entering windows that screen goes blank.
PCWorld and Asus want to charge and it is only just out of warranty.
Any thoughts. Hardly worth having it repaired at what you can bet is a minimum of £150 to £200.
Have tried messing with power settings and any adjustment will not save.

There is a provision in the Sales of Good act where you can argue for a repair under warranty. Plus if they stated a 1 year warranty, actually you have 2 under EU law.

If the display stays on in bios mode with the power lead disconnected, it sounds like a windoz 8 problem....
Can you re-install 8 to see what happens??

Its ASUS. Like Acer, its designed to fail at 1yr, 1d.
You can try to enforce the eu 2yr rule, but thats down to how much PC World stonewall, unless you fancy court.

If that fails, reseat the memory (using full ESP, nobody can touch a memory module without damaging it)
Is it a dedicated video adapter, if so, it may have suffered overheating, not much of a solution for that :'(

Embarassing - the screen was set to totally dim (like the user) when on battery - it took 3 calls to Asus and two to PCworld for someone to come up with a solution on this. PCWorld provided the effective advice and Asus just wanted to do a chargeable repair.
