Title: Sump Plug Washer
Post by: DrAndyB on 27 January 2014, 19:15:52
Daft question, but I am going to change the oil this weekend and I would like to confirm (before I take sump plug out and oil everywhere !!) is there a 'Correct' sump plug washer ?

I only ask as the Vauxhall garage had changed oil on all previous occasions up until a couple of years ago when I did it for the first time (changed oil on all my other cars, so thought would give it a go  :))

I remember getting a 'Sump Plug Washer' from the local Vauxhall Stealer but when I did the oil last time around I definitely recall the washer the VX Garage 'Sold' me was different to the one that was on there ! (this the original - or one the VX garage use previously).

I used the one which was already there and binned the one the garage gave me for the avoidance of doubt :y .

I recall one washer with a small rubber inner and one a standard copper washer.

What washer should I expect the original to be ?

Thanks in advance.
Andy.

You should find a rubber O ring on the sump plug.  :y :y

Early V6 had a traditional copper washer, later had an o ring.

If the sump plug is a normal hex bolt, its a copper washer, from memory 45Nm. If a T45 torx plug, its an o ring, and 15NM I think.

Thanks for quick reply.

I think, but will check, that its the torx plug ( large head as I Recall and i remember buying a bit for socket set) so will make sure I get one with o ring on then.  I suspect they sold me copper one last time.

Thanks for help, with tourque settings noted for torx one  :y

The car sits for a few days in the garage tucked under its blanket  :y.

As it would have been sitting for s few days would it be best to drop oil straight out or run engine for few mins to warm oil a little and then drain ?

Yes and don't over tighten as it strips very easily.  >:(

Not as easy as the utter crap monkey metal ones used on the BMW made TD sumps.

Oil all changed  :y  and running smooth  :D

Was O Ring Washer :y and 10Nm from Haynes  ;)

What made me laugh, was when got the sump plug seal from the VX Stealer the other day the parts chap said:

"Oooh, we don't get may Omega's in now ! To be honest mate, they were the last BEST car we made - it's all really been downhill since we stopped the Omega"   ;D

Total price - 29p !!  and he gave me 3 O rings and 3 Copper ones  :)
