Title: TV License & OnDemand
Post by: tunnie on 04 February 2014, 12:29:50
So the rules are, you only need a TV License if you watch the BBC or record the service as it's being broadcast. There is a known loop hole of on-demand, not being covered.

So if you use the internet and use 100% catch up services, or Sky's live channels, in theory you don't need a license?

Looks like more and more people are doing this? As I rarely watch content live these days, I'm considering going down the "I don't need one route"

I know a few people have done this and been successful, stating they only use on-demand services.

Anyone done the same?

Correct, anything thats not being broadcast live via any method, although in theory, if investigated, your TV, Recorder or what ever you use should not be capable of receiving live Material, how thats suppose to work with the internet though, no idea.

Exactly, that can watch Live too.

If they renamed the 'TV Licence' to 'Live Broadcast Licence' or something, it would all make more sense.

As far as I know, it's not just the fact that you don't watch live tv, you have to have no equipment that's capable of watching live tv.
They're hardly going to trust you, are they?

When all's said and done, it's only three quid a week.

If you don’t watch or record television programmes as they are being shown on TV, on any device, you don’t need a TV Licence. Here’s how you can let us know.

So according to that, you have to make a 'Sorn' like statement or face further agro, wonder how long before that become a Posted Fine.

Out of interest, what do these mini Sky Now Tv boxes do, is that Live or On Demand or both.

Both VOD and Live services  :y

What is annoying is if I want to watch just live Sky, which I can do via NowTV box, I do need a license. Yet through that, I cannot view live BBC, only catchup.

Going to be getting one anyway I think, MrsT would not be amused  ::)

Just wondering if anyone here has gone down that route  :)

Just had aread of that. So...if I wanted to save my three quid a week, I could plan my evenings viewing, set it all to record, and then start watching it five minutes after it started. ;D
A bit of a faff, but if it's a statement you want to make because you disagree in principal, then I suppose you might get some sort of smug satisfaction.

It's just a thought as 90% of my viewing now, is not live.

If its ITV/C4/C5 ect, I will on purpose wait, so I can watch without adverts. Not really a statement, just a fact I rarely watch live.

Just a sneaky look at the news and you would be criminalised, Master Tunnie.

After June this year I do not intend to be paying for a TV license, and will carry on watching live TV.

....and they can't touch me :D

Just wondering if anyone here has gone down that route  :)

I don't have a TV and watch what I want to see on my laptop via Catchup services.  I don't have a TV licence.  :)

I have wondered what would happen if the TV licence man came knocking.  ::)  Would they seize my laptop for examination to see if I've been watching live TV?  :-\

I don't have a TV licence, have no equipment connected to receive live TV and although I could watch on catch up I can't be bothered as I'm either working, on the Internet doing something more interesting or reading a good book. I've never been much of a TV person and nor is my wife.

I do miss the occasional football match and MotoGP but that is about it and I definitely don't miss the BBC's marxist, climate change agenda or all those annoying adverts. I can't see the way TV is going to evolve on how the TV licence is going to be a sustainable model.

What you might see with TV on demand is a choice of paying with no adverts and cheaper / free with adverts where I'm sure there will be many market models from the next generation of direct content providers is much the same way as there are many revenue models in the computer games market. Interesting times lie ahead in this market, where the in demand content providers will be king, not the transmission medium owners like present.
