So, in context, Andy... if:

You had pulled someone over for some minor misdemeanor,
they accelerate away as you approached the drivers window,
You pursue them for over 15 minutes,
When they eventually stop, they fail to put the handbrake on causing the car to roll back into your car, whilst you're standing next to them
The door is locked and you want to pull the keys to prevent any further danger to the rest of the population and to prevent the driver from making off again.

What would you do?

You are then constructively dismissed from you're job, because someone has posted a video on the internet, filmed incidentally by the equipment in the patrol car. You're two thirds of theway through your time in the Police Force and your dismissal results in the loss of your pension.

What would you do?

Just asking, like :y

Grow a set! It's called a life in a Blue (other colours are available) suit!

I think the copper was way over the top by smashing the window ..... been watching too much Starskey & Hutch ..... but that's not what I'm particulary  amazed at. It was his crying & whinging afterwards after a bit of piss taking.

Guess once it has been used as evidence and any legal action in relation to the events is concluded, it then becomes un classified and available on demand through FOI channels :-\

Or he was set up by his 'colleagues', in which case he obviously had legitimate grounds for a tribunal... had he not had grounds, he wouldn't have been settled :-\

Seen a lot worse on Road Wars  :-\
You're not wrong... retraining might have been in order for it taking fifteen goes to break the window though ;D

Video date on you tube is August 2010

Incident occurred on Sept 2009

I presume this was shown at the trial and then released due to a foi request

how come the driver got a payout if he was found guilty?
the copper was not found guilty of anything
the management needs a good kicking for the way he was treated
but the scarey bit is the cooper says he was suffering from mental illness,so why was he working?

I am not sure what the issue is really? If that driver was any younger he would have featured on Road Wars or some similar TV show. He drove away when asked to stop by the police. Remember the officer who was shot in his face? How the hell do you know what you are dealing with unless you immobilise the car and secure the driver. The driver in this case was clearly behaving like an idiot and resisting.

Then there is clearly a case of the officer having to resign due to pressure at work from idiotic colleagues So why should he have to grow a pair and take a financial hit. I am pretty certain most of us here wouldnt resign from a job they love due to the conduct of various colleagues and keep quiet about it.

I'm sure I could find it in the Times or Telegraph if you like.  ::)

It's just the kind of Plod attitude that is fantastic for Plod, Joe Public relations. When you want/need a copper for petty theft or some barsteward kicking your door mirrors off, a crime number is normally the best you'll get ........ only when you go to the local shop because they don't/won't answer the bloody phone.

Had that driver stopped when requested, none of this would have happened... think of the public cash and police time that would have been saved, meaning that some one who needed an immediate response to a situation might have received more than a crime number... the self fulfillment of these situations always seems to pan out with blinkered hindsight and selective reporting :-\

Agreed, but the response of the copper was way OTT .....

Kind of agree, the second copper on scene wasn't expecting copper 1 to start swinging his stick about. Nearly took his head off, twice ;D

Although, driver failed to stop. It was blatantly obvious what was required of him. The idiot.
I must say its a good job this isn't the USA, I would probably have shot some daft bint in the head on the way home tonight. Looked directly at me, sternly, crept forward still looking directly at me,as if to time the collision perfectly, then still looking at me, pulled out just at the right time and stopped in front of me.
Stopped, no problem, as she telegraphed it better than she can drive. But really, what is wrong with people? Tbh I think a response similar to that coppers would have perfectly reasonable.

It's a bit of a laugh though when you watch the video, where the Police are going nuts and you expect them to drag a big young bloke out of the car, but it's a little confused elderly fellow instead.....  ::)  ;D

Exactly  :y
Can you imagine the coppers acting like that if they was 5 strapping lads in there unbuckling there seatbelts ?
Nah, didn't think so  :)

No, they would have asked for backup and once it arrived, effected a stop and still smashed the windows in.

If the cop was OTT, what was the old bloke doing? Definitely OTT, driving away when asked to stop. And then resisting arrest. And he certainly doesn't seem confused posing for pictures (in a suit!) or arguing about the amount paid out!!

It is a one sided story designed to sell news.

I think it was over the top for what essentially was a stop initially for nor wearing his seatbelt that turned into speeding and FTS for police. A quick radio to other patrols and it could have easily been boxed in and brought to a controlled stop if necessary. The tool that jumped on the bonnet was very lucky he didn't get mowed down (imagine if he'd really gone for it and put his foot down  :o :o :o ) it would be bye bye Mr. Plod ::)

I had something like that happen to me a while ago, clown in a BMW initially stopped, then when I approached the car he did one. I could have easily jumped in front and batoned the window/windscreen, but self preservation / wanting to see tomorrow kicked in & I ran outa the way and radioed for help. Within 3 minutes about half a dozen patrol cars decended and the little $**** was caught SAFELY, (well after he ran into a field in the pitch darkness trying to out run the dog and ran into a barbed wire fence)

I'd say it could have been handled a lot better....

The old boy had pulled over of his own accord. Perhaps Mr policeman could have checked to see if the driver's door was open before attacking it with his baton, Rambo style.

Way over the top in my opinion. :(

Not much of a chase was it?

A maximum speed of 42 MPH, and all on the correct side of the road.

Mr Plod was just itching for some aggro in my opinion. :(

Comes down to commonsense surely, don't go looking for trouble...comply,be reasonable and if you have'nt done anything wrong then you'll be on your way.....job's a good 'un :y

Door was locked, as it had to be opened through the window... priority is removing the key in order to immobilise the vehicle...

Everything else can be dealt with afterwards :-\

Probably shitting himself that the coppers was going do to his head what they did to the windscreen  ::)

Don't get me wrong here, the stupid old tw*t deserved to have the book thrown at him BUT as I said, if they was 5 big lads in there then they would have been a hell of a lot more diplomatic  ;)
If the driver had been ramming cars all over the place and was a imminent danger to members of the public then fair enough, but that wasn't the case.

The coppers car has all the video evidence needed to put the driver in front of a judge and ban him for a few months.
Well over the top imo  :(

Very easy to make that judgement retrospectively and from behind a keyboard/screen. I have no idea what was going on the PC's mind and even whether he had had someone else try and kill him a few hours earlier on in the shift. We are presuming and assuming a lot of factors from what we have read in the papers/online etc. For eg: we cannot see the drivers actual reaction when they approach the driver as all I can see is the back of his head (from memory, I havent watched it again). It could have been threatening.

I am generally a very calm person and all my colleagues know that. But there have been one or two instances in my career where I have blown my top in response to a stress situation, disproportionately, because of events that had happened before the said incident. I am not saying that it is justified, but we are all human and I suspect some of us have made worse judgements. Yet to have a "holier than thou attitude" without actually witnessing the event or what led up to it, is a tad unfair.

There are a lot worse things going on in this country including paedophilia and child battering which I would rather worry about than some RR's windscreen. From memory they didnt physically assault the old guy, now that would have been OTT. My 2p.

But surely the technology exists now to record every spoken word on & off camera. I mean if the bloke had been in a nasty incident prior to this one we would then know or at least his boss would.

So every copper goes wired for sound as soon as he/she goes out to protect the community. Like it, yer would probably have caught me saying "woof" to that little blonde lady legs copper that came around the pompey factories the other day. Boys she`s a credit to the Hampshire force.  :y
Even the bulky uniform couldn`t hide those knock out curves. :P
I think I`m having another mid-life crisis  :D
