Title: Flooded roads
Post by: YZ250 on 08 February 2014, 09:45:15
Many years ago, my wife and I were returning from a night out in my dads brand spanking new car. It was a pitch black night and we were travelling along a back road near my parents house and as I drove under the railway bridge, all of a sudden, lights flashed everywhere and it felt like we'd hit a brick wall. This road was not normally any different to any other road after heavy rain so we sat there wondering what the hell had happened........... until the car started to sink, at which point we had to get out and swim for it.
Now the difficult part, explaining to my dad, at four o'clock in the morning, that I had just drowned, and I really do mean drowned, his brand new car. He asked if we were both ok and said "oh well, it couldn't be helped" and was very calm about it......... to my face anyway.  ;D

Well, with all this rain the dip under the bridge has flooded again and a Transit van has come to the same fate as me. As you can see, it gets rather deep.  ;D I shouldn't have the smilies as it wasn't funny at the time.  :-[ :'( :'(

This is what I hit, approaching from the far end of the dip.  :'( :'(

There's a road I Southwater that floods like that... fortunately, being residential it is lit. Driving along it in normal circumstances you wouldn't think it could get that deep, but it will swallow a car :o It doesn't flood very often, and inspite of all the rain lately, it hasn't flooded for a while...

Hope fully the Transit does not get stripped like the Audi RS5 that was in the papers last week after being abandoned after the New year floods

Edit

Too slow

Quite right.  :y You're well travelled in this area then, I assume from the Telecoms days?

I'm intrigued now.   :)

Knowing what happened to us at this bridge years ago, my son sent me the photo of the bridge and asked how I would react if he'd drowned my new car. I'm still pondering over that one.  ;D

Funny you mentioned Audi, as the van now has an Audi Q7 to keep it company.  ::) I'm not going to criticise as it may have been dark and I know what that's like.  :'( :'(

Probably a good thing they didn't get any further, could have hit the van head on at speed :-\

Judging by the angle it's on and the fact that it entered the water from the shallow end, I'm wondering if he/she thought " I'm doing ok here, yeh not too bad at all, I'm gunna make it..... Sh*t, who put that van there.  ;D ;D

Given the current predicament in Berkshire/Surrey, might it not be prudent to open the Thames Barrier and allow the locks and wiers up as far as Reading Reading to free flow?

Just wondering like :-\

Large puddles are almost invisible on dark unlit roads. Even if there is street lighting, the depth isn't always obvious :-\

I understand your point but I always thought: high beam+fog lights+full caution during poor weather conditions...
Anyhow, nice to meet you  :y

Likewise :y

High beam and foglights aren't always practical :-\ Can't account for crap design or human stupidity either ::)

Just wondering like :-\

Because it wont make any difference?

The idea is it opens just as the sea side level drops below the river side when the tide has turned, around when the tide reaches its low point, its closed, this creates an effective 'empty reservoir' inland of the barrier for the river water to 'fill'. If it remains open then the tide fills it.

Simples.....and a very clever and impressive piece of civil engineering
