Ok, so I've not been getting 14 volts out of current alternator so popped to scrap yard today and picked up another. Charging all good now at 14.5volts but the battery light on the dash comes on when you take the key out.
Any thoughts? I m struggling to work out what fault eh alternator has to produce that effect!

Is it on when the engine is running?
-
No, only when key out, once running 14.5 volts and light goes out.
I've taken it apart and seem the exciter wire supply was shorted to the alternator output - pic to follow.

If the engine isnt running, but the key is in, does the light stay off? Or does it come on? I once power washed under the bonnet and from then the car made a buzzing noise with the key out, and the central locking started playing up. It sorted itself out once dried out.

I replaced once an brush/regulator pack to an Omega (pattern part) and it did that same occasionally; batt light flashed and/or went on for a few seconds after turning off the engine. Have so far not found any reason for it, seems it's because opf the pattern regulator.
