Is it OK to use easy start on my 2.2dti? If so, where do I spray it?
The car is outside my home, it has been running lovely for weeks now, no problems.
The fuel warning light is on & I knew I was low on fuel - I planned to fill up in the morning.
I've drained the battery trying to start her - the battery is now off being charged & I will try again when it's ready.
I've been down the garage & put 5 litres in with the can. Any advice please? :-[

No .. NO .. NO
under no circumstances EVER use that unadulterated crap. All you will do is wreck the engine .. perhaps not the first time .. but over time it will kill it. Dead. Finito. Terminally.

You might need to bleed the fuel through :y
-
OK....I've got that message - no easy start!! :y
The battery is now going back on & I will try again.
If no joy, what's involved to bleed the fuel through?

Persistence and a lot of cranking.
I've used Easy Start before, just don't go mad with it...

Just in case you want another opinnion....
NO!!

;D ;D ;D.....UPDATE....... yes, she started thank you, thank you. Without the easy start.
It took an awful lot of turning over & I thought briefly that I may flatten the battery again.
Can someone please explain to me why I shouldn't use the easy start though, because I don't understand why not? What damage would it do? ::)
-
If memory serves it used to make cars very hard to start without it if you used it all the time
Just in case you were going to use it DON'T ;D

Easy Start is so volatile that it ignites well before each piston reaches top dead centre - so it's burning, forcing the piston down, while the piston is being driven upwards by the crankshaft. Something has to give. Normally you'll end up with bent rods.
If its' own fuel system isn't causing it to start, that needs fixing. Easy start doesn't prove anything.
-
I'm sure Mr DTM will be along in the morning to explain the evils of using ether/easy start, if you are lucky he will just post pictures of a damaged piston and bent conrod but I would be putting a phone book down the trousers in case he is in a bad mood.
Nothing wrong with the accurately metered ether delivery systems fitted to some commercial and construction vehicles to aid cold starting, its the hand-held spray cans that do the damage.

Brings back memories of a chap I worked who used half a can of it at a time one winter in a prehistoric Transit :)
Poor old engine :'( :'( :'(

There is an alternative WD40 or carb cleaner up air intake (I use WD40).
Then turn the ignition off and on about 12-20 times(for about 5 seconds each time) this will activate the fuel pump in the tank and fill the fuel filter & fuel lines and saves burning out the starter.
Another point 5 litres of fuel is not enough put 20 litres in.

Easy start. Mmm brings back memorys,
get long tube stick in air intake on FSIE when flat out give big squirt, whoooosh 2-5mph faster. And use same tube and can on tractor could get flames out the exhaust, are mispent youth..... 8)

my FS1E had drops, micron expansion, 300 or 350 rear tyre, skimmed head, raised and widened exhaust port, YB 100 carb, modified disc valve and did 68mph, we was cooking on 5star aswell..
so ya still wanna race then :D

A mate of mine had a Puch Maxi.. and another had a Raleigh Wisp. :D Does it get any worse than that?

Honda Express?
Luxury. You didn't even have to pedal that along like a bike to get it started.. Mind you, that feature was a handy backup when it wouldn't start. ::)

My mate had a Puch Maxi (with pedals) and how we laughed!! Until he left us in a cloud of dust, as it was the fastest 50 in town! ::) ;D

My mate managed to get knocked off his by our maths teacher's wife. We didn't laugh much! ;D

Dont ever use easy start. The need to means something else is wrong.
If its been run low on fuel, the fuel system will have air in it. To bleed the low pressure side, carefully pull the leak back pipe off above the inlet manifold where it starts to branch into four, hold the piece that runs down to the injector pump union and apply suction. This will draw fuel into the filter housing. Once you get diesel to the end of the pipe, quickly reconnect it back to where it branches off.
If necessary, to bleed the high pressure side, slacken the 4 17mm unions where the injector pipes meet the injectors below the end of the leak back pipes, without disturbing the leak back pipes if possible... and turn the engine over on the key until fuel spurts from the injector unions (This wont work with the leak back pipes off). Tighten them back up and the engine should start. Albeit a little groggy at first.
The engine appearing to run out of fuel when the tank is 1/8 to 1/4 full (especially when parked nose upwards) means the swirl pot in the fuel tank pickup needs cleaning out. In particular the spring loaded valve at the base of it.

Thanks for the advice.....it has only happened the once, I think it is unlikely to be a residual problem but should it happen again I will have a go at this if it's not too involved!! ::) I will have a look further into how to do this. ;)

its for the 2.5 but the 2.2 is the same other than the absence of an electric lift pump.
