I know he is raising money but there is a lot more than that he requires to achieve his goal. I though that some on here would be able to help sourcing parts, any spare tools we may have, know of any cheap cars he could use, mechanical training and helping setup the car before he goes etc.
He is an Ex-Army officer who is married to a friend of mine, doing this crazy thing in support of a charity close to his heart.

Maybe we can get him to put an OOF sticker in the back window? ;D

How about we organise a meet and give the car a good check over and general service for them?
-
Sounds good, I will be donating some old tools too :y

Given what they are doing the likes of a full set of fluids changed, fabricate a sump gaurd, check suspension over carefuly etc etc would be a good 'gift' perhaps
-
I think he would be over the moon with that kind of help :y
-
That sounds like a really great idea. I'd be up for it. :y
-
I'm sure I could help with sourcing a car, or even donating one. 1 litre awful cars are things I always shove through an auction so I'd be glad to see one doing something useful :y

Preferably something a bit old school, the last thing they want is it loaded with a plethora of electronics IMHO.
-
True, but it also needs to be robust. A 205 would ideal but I bet there arent many around :/

That's very generous Josh :y

Reality is that any thing with a 1.0 engine is going to be pretty basic (and tiring to drive over that distance)

Mostly 1.6s :'(

Could an Omega actually move with a 1.0 Nova engine fitted :-\ would a 1.0 turbo Mondeo even last the distance ::)
-
I would think a Polo or Corsa would be suitable. A Micra and a Yaris I would discount. A 973cc Corsa doesn't sound like an inspired or exciting choice, but it'd probably be what I'd go for.
Matt, have a chat with him, and see what he'd prefer :y
I certainly take on board nothing too modern, but a 2001 Corsa C, or even a Corsa B seems ok?
-
Would a Bedford Rascal be rugged and Diy friendly enough to do the trip :-\
-
Josh's suggestion of the Corsa or Polo are good ones, but I think I'd tip towards the Polo as I'd think VW's are more common in Russia. :-\ They won't be able to carry a massive selection of spares and may have to source bits locally. :(
Mind you I expect there are some pretty good 'Bush Mechanics' out there who could make any part fit to any vehicle! ;D

Guffer - is your man doing this as a participant in the organised Rally to Mongolia which is scheduled for July 14th. If he is then I think there may be rule changes as cars have to be less than 10 years old and in that respect they changed the spec to allow vehicles up to 1200cc.
-
Definitely read somewhere that 1200 cc allowed but this says not
http://www.theadventurists.com/mongol-rally#mongol-rally-un-route (http://www.theadventurists.com/mongol-rally#mongol-rally-un-route)
-
The way the details read, they have changed them specifically to make it more of a challenge as most of the roads between here and there are tarmac, so have reintroduced the older 1.0 rule :y
-
I spoke to him last night and yes it is the Mongol rally so a 1200cc would be allowed. :y

It is a question of how we as OOF want to approach it IF we are proposing to be the backbone of his effort. I have raised a lot of money for stuff over the years but have been a lot more focused on orphans/family strengthening in last 8/9 years. I am not good at the emotional stuff but the fundraising can be interesting.
I will put down some ideas and see who is interested and if Guffer can assess whether it will work for the guy we are supporting.
Big picture - what is our unique approach to get funding (jargon USP):
1. This is an event involving vehicles
2. It involves an ex- military Sandhurst person
3. It is for a charity
4. the person undertaking the challenge has already and will have mountains to climb.
The story has to be condensed to a much shorter punchier version which emphasises the above points - and others I am sure with your contributions.
My initial take:
To fit with this forum we have a Vauxhall theme - if we can get support from Vauxhall dealers. Having spent nearly a £1000 with Eden Vauxhall Camberley this month my wife has suggested support to them and the main man has asked for a proposal. Having spent a lot with local suppliers recently I would also have a number of non-cold contacts I could make - double glazing, kitchens, diy stores, plumbers merchants etc etc plus say Waitrose, Tesco M&S, B &Q, Maplins and so on.
We blend a local base - Sandhurst, Farnborough, Aldershot etc to get things moving and then see what traction is obtained from the wider OOF membership beyonf what has already been suggested/contributed to date.
Now - 2 big questions - there is an entry fee for him to pay - who is covering that?
What do we offer our sponsors by way of advertising and promotion.
The local press would be huge on this and promoting Vauxhall's involvement would be a good option if they were to be the lead sponsor.
Guffer - what is your view on this?
Small acorns - a bereaved family were collecting money for a charity when they lost their 13 year old son back in the 90s. They asked to collect money at an AGM I was chairing and got £300 or so. I came up with ideas and we turned it into a local event that raised £5000 a year with an event in the boy's name each year thereafter. Just a question of how confident we are and do we have the time to see through anything that we start - we must avoid raising expectations if we cannot deliver. What is different here is that there is a nexus with the motoring, old cars, spares etc which suggests we might have a chance.
Thoughts??
-
TBH I wasn't thinking about the fundraising aspect, more about using the mechanical knowledge and expertise here to set him up as best we can. If we can also give useful tips for fundraising that would be of massive benefit also :y
-
Guffer - email sent to you - is Duncan living in our area?
-
Seen. I am waiting for him to get back to me about that :y
-
If time allows, I'm up for helping out.

He'll come in handy if they have a misfuelling incident in the @rse end of nowhere too, of course. :y

Or if a burger needs flipping. ...just make sure its not a whopper ;D

Well the time is here and there were some great ideas. Does anyone know of any suitable cars near them?
-
Any use?

Have assumed he's Aldershot way, so rummaged near enough to be useful :y

This all went quiet - not sure which area he is in. Guffer?
