Just aquired above car with the 150ps 16v 2.5dti and only 122,000kms.
Only drove in the dark for the first time last night,zenons rather dim!!
Is there a known fault with the power supply that causes this - main beam is fine!!

Usually bulbs.
I had similar on my 1998 MV6, at night, esp in oncoming traffic, illumination was shocking. Replaced bulbs, back to normal.
After changing one bulb, before starting on other, I turned lights on to check, and just looking at them in daylight, the difference was amazing.

2.5DTi is still a straight 6, isn't it?

Yes its the straight 6 with the later common rail 24 v double overhead cam BMW engine.
Its a manual (would have really liked the 5 speed auto!) but drives very well and has uk elite spec( inc the 2015 with built in phone and big screen navi) but no walnut and 16" alloys.

You brought it back, or are you keeping it in Euroland?
The bulbs I used as a replacement were Osram, 4.2k, which looked to be what was fitted in 1998.

All Omegas (certainly in the UK, no reason to think EU were different) are D2S. Cheaper HID bulbs available, but many reports of poor life, and a refusal to strike on intermittently made me pay the extra for Osram.
To change, airbox needs to come out and battery needs to come out. Too fiddly to do without removing these. Took me around 30mins last week.

A polish up of the polycarbonate lens will also help, as after 11yrs, possibly not as clear as they once were

both my 03 cd and my dads 02 cd are not on D2S, just the standard halogen things not HID .... WHICH ARE PANTS!

both my 03 cd and my dads 02 cd are not on D2S, just the standard halogen things not HID .... WHICH ARE PANTS!
HIDs are D2S. Halogens are H7(?).
Osram Nightbreakers are the recommended bulbs for poor sods with Halogens, along with lens polish and electrical checks

I'm fitting 80w blue H1's for dipped (at halfords for off road use only) and 100w H7's (again from Halfords and using them for offroad honest) for main! It's the only way I'm going to get the light I need :o

I think you'd be better off with proper. brighter bulbs like Nightbreakers, rather than (illegal) high power, poncy showlights.
You may need to look at the wiring if you do go for higher powered bulbs.

that was first thought but I have seen the 110% brighter (so they claim) zenon type halogens my dad fitted and they are utterly useless when faced with other traffic .. the lights really are not bright enough

That's actually a very good point. Although HIDs consume less power when up & running - there is a massive inrush current when they are switched on from cold. I'm sure GM factored this in with the overall loom design, but if higher power bulbs are fitted then some form of relay may be needed. Given the vicinity of the lights to the battery this shouldn't be too much of a problem if you have the necessary electrical ability.

Chav/show bulbs are utterly hopeless. Purely for show, not function.
The nightbreakers do work well, remain legal, and no issues with wiring.
