Mr tunnie - Sky Go or whatever its called, what sort of bandwidth does it need on an average laptop (suspect lappy uss more than a smartphone)?
I guess in Londonium, it works "OK" on 3G, what about rural 3G that tends to be slower and more variable? Public Wifi (again, not Londonium)?
This is for a poor old pensioner, and I don't want them to sign up to a mobile broadband contract if its mostly not viable. They tend to holiday in picturesque (and hilly) areas in old cottages.

What device are they using SkyGo on? PC or Tablet? Assuming PC?
Say 3G so mobile device? :-\

Just checked, if it's web on PC/Mac, going to need around 3,000 - 3,5000 kbps to be sure of getting top wack streams.
Even on mobile a 10 second 'chunk' is well over 1mb in size, so going to eat through any data limit.
Public WiFi, not much experience personally. But I expect a lot of media streaming is throttled at the CDN side, they know Akamai serve the big ones, so that's going to be slowed down to ensure people can just get mails and general web use.
Unless it's a very good strong 3G signal, I'd forget it, they would get frustrated with the buffering.
What you want them to get (sorry for the plug) is Sky Go Extra, this allows downloads. So download a shed load of content on home BB, for viewing out in the sticks. Downside is of course no live, but can do catchup/VOD.

Aye, laptop generally means PC (or Mac) :P.
So, yeah, a 3G USB dongle.

By "Top whack", is that HD streams, or SD streams. I think a 576i type SD stream would be adequate.
I think this is more for (semi) live footie/cricket etc, so not really an option to d/l before hols. If non sport, easier to take a Only Fools and Horses DVD Boxset :)
Useful info, tunnie :y, are you able to clarify what sort of bandwidth a watchable SD stream (assuming you were talking HD earlier). Do you also know how well the PC app (assuming there is one) copes with dips in bandwidth - does it buffer enough to overcome (eg, 30s worth of buffering)?
TIA

I must admit, my knowledge of the web player is limited. :-[
It does 'Smooth Streaming' based on Silverlight, so ensure it's latest version. You've got two options, via the browser or via the desktop App. Worth trying both out see which one suits them best.
None of streams to be hones are true HD, depends really what you want to class as HD ::) not sure what I can publicly say, but I'll PM you some further details bandwidth :y

Merci bucket.
I think its going to be unusable in this sceanrio, where maintaining a constant 1Mbps is going to be challenging....
