Title: OT - help needed for a stripped plug thread
Post by: Bandit127 on 08 June 2008, 09:07:55
Hi All. As stated - OT because it refers to my mates Fireblade.

He has stripped no.4 plug thread (RHS viewed from the seat) and done a proper job - you can easily push the plug home by hand. The problem is that a conventional Helicoil repair needs the engine out. There's a beam accross the top of the engine that stops us being able to get a drill in there to drill the tap hole. Could probaby get something cobbled up to drive the tap with the space available though - about 1 1/2" above the head.

Engine out is £600!

Does anyone know of a thread repair kit that we could get in there with the engine in place? Like I said, there is about 1 1/2" above the head and the plug well is about 4" deep.

How about the Loctite "glue" kit - I am assuming that it would not cope with the temps and compression but I may be wrong.

The thread is 10mm (with what looks like 1.25mm pitch).

Thanks in advance.

Jim

Sorry, other than helicoil, no other ideas that will be strong enough.  Std spark plug is 10x1.25 thread.

Moving to general chat as not Omega related.

You can get helicoil taps that dont require the hole drilling first...
