New government proposals and outline for councils suggests so. :(

It's already the norm.

It's already the norm.
Sad but true :-\
-
It's already the norm.
Already exists for any goods vehicle over 7.5 ton.
There's going to be a trial on the A9 where vehicles over 7.5t will be allowed to do 50mph as the 40 is causing to many accidents with kamikaze car drivers getting impatient.
-
The A30 (which is a proper dual carriageway) has had a 40 mph limit in place for years which starts at the Crooked Billet (Staines) and lasts all the way in to Hounslow.
-
Limits have been gradually creeping in round here on many of the rural A & B roads for years..... ::) >:(
-
Is it not ridiculous that in any other form of transport, speed is lauded as a great way to save time and money, yet as soon as speed is mentioned in connection with motoring, it becomes an emotive issue?
Where is the logic when vehicles have become safer and more capable and yet speed limits have progressively been reduced?
The true speed limitation seems to be the appalling state of the roads!
In the article it stares "a reduction to 40mph should also be considered where there is "substantial development" or where there are "a considerable number" of horse-riders, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.": if there were a serious intent to reduce accidents, maybe we should consider horse riders and cyclists inappropriate on most of today's roads and traffic conditions?

What about drivers, though? :-X

I agree, Kevin - a lifetime's licence for a 17-year-old who behaves himself just long enough to pass the test, then goes and buys a hot hatch - a recipe for disaster!
Even when he grows up, if he lives long enough to do so, there are no further checks on him.
I'd be happy to see regular re-tests at, say, 5 year intervals and of sufficient duration to show the real behaviour of the testee.
Yes, Mr. Cameron, you CAN afford it, out of the $50,000,000,000 you steal from us each year, giving us back only 10%!

In so many cases country roads that are not A roads do only justify a 40mph limit, and even on A roads themselves in many places the lower limit is right. However, as mentioned in the article, it is amazing that the motorway limit is only 70mph, when in many places you can legally travel at 60 on country roads. That is what needs to be addressed; raise the motorway limit to 90 mph, or more, whilst reducing the limits elsewhere to really match the conditions of all roads.
I agree with previous comments that limits are already being reduced on many country roads, with our local A28 being a case in point. Throughout it's length, at least South of Canterbury, 40 or 50 mph limits have now been imposed over much of it's length and it is now hard to find any distances covered by "unrestricted" regulation.
-
If people seen a speed limit on country roads as just that, a LIMIT! Not a target we wouldn't have to lower them.
-
Lowering the limit on A roads makes no odds...
The A140 is a case in point, it runs straight from Norwich to Ipswich. They dropped the limit 40/50 along most of its length, along with no overtaking zones and a smattering of cameras a decade or so ago, yet people still kill themselves on it with regular monotony ::) these are mostly people taking a chance when turning across the traffic into/out of one of the many side roads
Only way to make it truly safe would be to build a roundabout every two miles, with a central armco barrier along its entire length allowing only left turns.
The rural 40 limits around here are unenforced as the police didn't agree to the lowering of them, arguing that it was always the drivers responsibility to drive to the road conditions and ensuring that they could stop in the visible available distance.
Obviously if you hit a pedestrian or cyclist at 80mph around a blind bend or crest, then you deserve to be put on soap duty :-\
If people seen a speed limit on country roads as just that, a LIMIT! Not a target we wouldn't have to lower them.
They're not targets, they're rough approximations of what some gimp in an office twenty miles away thinks might be a good idea...
If the roads were better designed then they wouldn't need to keep lowering limits in the name of safety... and the first person who suggests that it is in the name of the environment will be awoken at 3.30 am every school night by a big diesel V8 at full chat :y

I think they do this in Sweden on many of their rural single carraigeway 'A' roads. :-\

Part of the trouble I think is that new cars have so many safety aids,ABS,airbags all over the place etc.,etc, that people are coming to believe they can drive like idiots and the car will protect them when it all goes Pete Tong.Bring back the guy with the red flag!!!

A mate of mine got a new car several years ago and was very impressed it had abs
He was shocked when driving on the motorway one day there was an accident ahead and the car in front did an emergency stop to avoid being part of the pile up, his efforts were in vain as my mate shoved his new motor right up the chuff of the poor beggar who had done an excellent emergency stop ;D ;D
He insisted that his abs should have prevented the crash, no amount of explaining would convince him he could not change the laws of physics ;D ;D

This happened last night on a 30mph road! Not very pretty, took out most of my shift :o :o :o ???

Despite my commute being made up of mostly 50mph, 60mph and a couple of short stretches of 70mph, I struggle to every exceed 40mph most days. Too many 'tards on the road who drive dangerously slow.
I suspect these 'tards have never had an accident, but witness many >:(
The speed limit should also be a minimum, assuming weather/road conditions allow, and people not maintaining the speed removed from the roads. And shot.

There is a whole country beyond London, where such problems rarely occur, where they do it is only for half an hour in the morning and evening, bikers heaven up here............ :y :y :y

Its spreading outwards though. Bloody do-gooders and their misguided, retarded thoughts. Certainly since one of the main roads here has become a 50mph limit for about 16 miles, I've seen shitloads more accidents.

Seconded. And also bring in a minimum for motorways and fine assholes that piss about at 40-50 in cars and fine them if they force a lorry to overtake them. Hmmm rant over
-
One of my pet hates is when you see artics having to overtake cars on the motorways/dual carriageways!
If, as mentioned earlier, the road conditions permit, there is no reason why cars shouldn't be doing a minimum of 70mph, not bloody 70km p/hr.
These idiots should be taken off road as driving less than 60mph on these roads is more dangerous than travelling at say 80mph (if it was legal to do so) :y

As anyone with a highway code knows, there is a minimum motorway limit, but its a paltry 30mph...
On Friday, I was getting off the M40, and before I'd left the carriageway, a lorry nearly had my chuff, as the dickhead in front had slowed to nearly 30mph to exit the motorway, and I was stuck behind. Then the silly tit had to accelerate to get to the roundabout at top of slip road. Effing mongrels.

Utter rubbish :) firstly the limit is irrelevant as the morons round here drive at 30 / 40 in a national speed limit. Usually the blue rinse bregade or immigrants that can't drive anyway.
Secondly, the traffic level won't allow it.
The over riding factor is competence. But speed is much easier to set as a rating, rather than setting "a competence limit" on a certain road.
Speed and competence are two VERY different things. Say speed is a factor in over 70% of accidents as an example. All of them have a competence factor, purely by default.

They should stick to their limit of 56MPH then....... I regularly get pushed or even passed by some artics on my regular commute to work, or have to drive well in excess of 70 to get passed them safely.................... :-X

Basic physics Mike ::) limited at 56mph actual... gravity might allow a true road speed of 60mph.
To overtake cleanly you need to do at least 10% more, so that's 6mph as a minimum so possibly as high as 65-66mph actual speed.
At an indicated 70mph, I would be surprised if your car, or most anyones for that matter, was doing more than 65mph actual.
Trucks cannot be driven faster than the limiters allow. Full stop. Every truck travelling at more than the limited speed is at the mercy of gravity. Not magic.
Best bet, set your cruise control to an indicated 75mph. You won't be speeding, and you will be ahead of the trucks :y

Whilst I agree with everything you say Al, my very first penalty points for speeding were for 60 mph on the A1 which was limited to 40mph for trucks; I have also previously tweeked limiters (a bolt that stopped the throttle that could be screwed further in, Dodge) and fuel pumps for more mph (Ford) ok going back a few years.......Have held an HGV1, and PSV, for 35 years...... ;) ;)
-
Most modern trucks are dbw, so no such obvious fiddles now, also alot trucks have a hypothetical geared max speed of 68-75... optimum cruise speed of 56mph... no coincidence with emission laws nowadays ::)
Guessing that was a single carriageway stretch with those limits :-\

Nope, dual, in the 80's..........82/83 irc, down near Doncaster way......... :)

You want to try travelling on the M62 going towards Liverpool on the dowhill section from jct 22 to 21. Too much traffic to do 75 in any lane and if you're in the middle lane you'll have a HGV right up your chuff at speeds of 65 to 70

Used to go up that stretch at 70 in my old Leyland in the days before limiters.

Re read that with emphasis on indicated speed and actual speed. You aren't travelling as fast as you think you are :y

On a old analogue tacho then yes 60+ down hill possible on a digital it tells you your over speeding and you must slow down or it pings up overspeed and the next time you down load your card it will show up and if your unlucky the man in the chequered hat or vosa get there paws your card your getting a fine.
HGV's should be able to do 65 on a motorway the same as a bus and ban the blue rinse brigade.
Another bit of useless info passengers on a bus are classed as live stock ;D
