Title: fitting traction control
Post by: davieboy0312 on 02 March 2014, 10:19:52
Hi guys.

I got the engine, wiring and ecu from my old omega (3.0l v6 shell rotten) going to transplant into a newer shell. but the car I got is a 2.2 auto

question - used to have traction control new car doesn't, would I be able to get it back somehow.

Yes if you swap the following...

ALL the wiring from the 3.0
ABS Pump
TC switch

Will need to remove the dash from both cars along with the scuttle and pollen filter housing (only to make removing/refitting looms easier) :y

Without all the wiring from the dash to the engine bay/abs unit it's likely to be a non starter :-\

scrappy diving it is then. unless anyone got one I can purchase

Im not convinced you will get it working regardless.

The ABS ECU needs to know the engine type its connected to, and talks to the Gearbox and Engine ECU's
There isnt an option to program it to a 2.2, so suspect it either wont work, or you will have a world of weird issues.

I have everything from original car. engine, gearbox, ecu and wiring loom and abs pump all from original car.

ahhh misread sorry, thought you were trying to retrofit TC to the 2.2 :y

no point with TC on a 2.2

I had a 3.0l manual omega but was rotten at the crossmember at the front so stripped everything

got another car is a 2.2 auto and wanting to know if TC will work if I get a switch or will I need wires from switch to ecu or somewhere else

Do you have ALL the engine bay wiring, including the wiring from the ABS ecu to the engine ecu?

If not, get rummaging or pop a wanted ad in the test zone :y

yea got the wiring for the abs unit to the whole loom fuse box in engine bay and everything. apart from dash loom

abs ecu???? what that look like

Including both sides of both round plugs next to the battery and the loom from these/the engine ecu to the bulkhead?

If yes to the last item, then you might just get away with splicing to the same loom on your 2.2 with an extra bit of wiring to fit the TC switch and relevant dash loom :-\ the 2.2 might even have the dash wiring in place... pop out the blanking plate from between the alarm switch and the boot switch (saloon only) should be 3 terminals there. If there are, obtain a facelift TC switch and fit it. When you press it, engine running, if the TC light comes on below ABS lamp, then things might be easier :-\

What age was the 3.0?

its was a 2000 on a W
the new one is a 2000 on a X

fingers crossed its got it.

Take it both cars are facelift then...

What the 2.2 won't have is the wiring from the dash to the engine bay/abs ecu...

so it might have the wiring behind the switch but not to the dash? wish I had taken all the wires out now

You misunderstand... the wiring will likely be in the dash. What will be missing is the wiring from the dash to the ABS ecu. Basically there are two plugs at the lefthand front footwell. Some of the wiring runs to the back of the car, the rest goes to the engine bay ecus/fuse box etc.

There are four wires from the ABS ecu, three to the instrument cluster...
1. Speedo feed.
2. ABS lamp.
3. TC lamp.

And one wire, 4. to the TC switch.

Your 2.2 will have 1. and 2.

The wiring for 3 and 4 will be in the dash loom, but might not get as far as the plugs that connect the dash to the engine bay...

will get a switch and try it out if it doesn't work then I take it I will need a full dash loom?

Re read my last... the loom is most likely in the dash, but might not be connected to the plugs in the front passenger footwell ::)

Hence the light might not come on with the switch fitted. This is because the switch only connects to the abs ecu.
The abs ecu then puts the tc light on. Removing the switch blank will tell you if the switch wiring is present in the dash. There will be three contacts for the switch...

sorry for not catching on quick enough.

when I remove blanking plate there is three connections there have ordered a switch so unable to test

If memory serves some of the 4 pots only had a 3 channel ABS system, so a 4 channel ABS ECU with TC is going to be a challenging fit without changing the plumbing. Might be worth verifying the ABS block has 4 pairs of pipes into and out of the top plate?

I have the original abs pump from last omega. is that what you mean?
Title: Re: fitting traction control
Post by: 05omegav6 on 03 March 2014, 12:10:41
Does the 3.0 abs unit have the same number of pipes as the 2.2 unit?
Title: Re: fitting traction control
Post by: davieboy0312 on 03 March 2014, 12:34:27
both units have 4 pipes on the top and 2 on the back

Yes, sorry- that's what I meant. OK, at least the plumbing is there.
Title: Re: fitting traction control
Post by: davieboy0312 on 03 March 2014, 19:23:31
so if the plumbing is there all I need is to plug it in and fingers crossed its there??

Er... not quite...

You will have wiring to do ::) the question is how much, not if :y
Title: Re: fitting traction control
Post by: davieboy0312 on 03 March 2014, 19:57:32
would it be as easy as getting another loom from dash to the passenger plugs?
Title: Re: fitting traction control
Post by: 05omegav6 on 03 March 2014, 20:15:47
Define easy...

As far as TC goes you're probably missing two wires running through the bulkhead :-\

As for the engine to dash wiring...

You need all the wirirng that you don't currently have from the 3.0. For simplicity, from the same age and same model and same gearbox.

There will be other wiring differences between the two engines/dash. So could be easier to adapt the wiring inside the car to suit rather than fitting a whole new loom.

But for this to work, you need to know exactly what those differences are, and where they are in the loom...

so I would need to find another car same age, engine etc and check wires to see what wires I do and don't have?

would be easier living without TC
Title: Re: fitting traction control
Post by: 05omegav6 on 03 March 2014, 20:47:49
TC is the easy bit :y it's the dash to engine wiring as much as anything :-\

I am obviously confusing the hell out of you :-[
