Title: Changing HBV without draining coolant?

You only lose a small amount of coolant when the HBV is removed.  :y  :y

Yes, the water level only drops to the level of the leak. A severe hbv leak will see the coolant level drop to the bottom of coolant tank, as that's the height of the hbv. Hence that's where gm placed it, so the engine coolant doesn't empty avoiding the engine over heating if the hbv fails.

If the coolant level is still high in the bottle, it might be less messy to open the rad tap until the bottle is empty. There's certainly no need to empty the system completely though.

Some coolant will escape, inevitably, so a hose down with clean water after the work is done should minimise the never ending smell off coolant when the engine is hot.
