I need to change a 2-3 solenoid and am forced to go down the cheapskate route of either reusing the existing gasket or just using silicone to seal it. I have used Holts instant gasket before without issue but have a tube of the super duper grey rocker cover gasket silicone in my tool box and wondered if it is up to the job?

The black rocker sealent is not upto the job, the grey oil cooler slealent (in the small cartridge) would be. :y

Or go to landrover and buy sump sealant/instant gasket for a 300tdi engine Its dear but good

Wonder why not? I have used Loctite 5699 or 5900 (which was 598 in the past I think...) for both these jobs with success and without any issues and this has been referred on this forum to be exactly the same product as the original black goo in the factory.

Some confuse the two.
There is a black silicon sealent used on the cam cover gasket corners which is not suitable, this is close to the 5699, its very flexible but not so good where its immersed in oil (ok on the cam cover gaskets as they only see light splash)
In addition, there is a grey sealent used on the engine sump and oil cooler plate which is suitable, this is similar to 598/5900 and is good for items immersed in oil so good for the sumps of the gearbox etc

Locking in 2nd regularly and after revving its nuts off it will move into 3rd, occasional feeling of slippage going into 3rd. ATF level is good and transmission codes show it is the issue. I have a couple of spare solenoids and it doesn't look to hard to do so worth a go.
