Title: Oil Leak at Exhaust Manifold Studs

Hi
  Sorry this is not totally Omega orientated but was looking for a bit of help,I have just completed an engine swap on my B series 1999 2.2i Frontera . Old engine had hole in block so had sourced a second hand engine from local Scrapyard.Which came out of a 51 plate Omega
I had noticed some coked up burnt oil on the back end of the Exhaust manifold before fitting the secondhand engine but thought it had been coming from Rocker Cover Gasket. I replaced this but on starting the engine it appears the oil is leaking along the rear three or four Exhaust Manifold stud threads,as I said it looks like this has been happening for quite a time . Just wondering if it was just a case of removing the manifold and Studs and refitting the Studs with Loctite Thread Sealant or is there possibly more damage and should I be returning the Engine. Engine appears to be running ok but just wondered if I could pick your brains and find out if anyone here has seen or heard of this before.

Any indication of a blow from the exhaust manifold at all?

Signs that stem seals are failing (smoking on startup etc)?

Thanks for the reply and sorry for putting post in wrong section.
 
No signs of smoke on start-up or blow from manifold.
Would stem seals make it leak along the stud threads or should that just go right out through manifold and exhaust.

Might try and have a word with scrapyard and see if its ok to remove manifold and have a look.

I wonder if somebody in a dim and distant past has drilled out some damaged studs and drilled to far....

...although I dont recall any pressurised oil galleries in that location

I dont think so either.  Could be very very bad cam cover leak?  Have you pulled the plugs and checked for oil?

Edit:  I see they were changed but did you clean the breathers?  If not the gaskets have probably gone again.

   I have now removed the Exhaust manifold after talking with the guy who supplied the engine,Just wanted to check it wouldn't go against returning it if necessary.
Looks like and have my fingers crossed,that possibly has been R/C gasket leak and oil holding up in shim type manifold gasket ,also found a blind hole about half inch diameter by half inch deep behind the gasket that looks like it also has been filled with the leaking oil, which has been weeping along stud threads when the manifold heats up.
