Title: Next car - Thoughts
Post by: Allenm on 13 November 2006, 09:39:59
Well, since the death of the meega the other day,  I have been completely unsucessful in finding another to replace it.  I really need as new a car as I can get hold of, and finding one of those with a driver involvement pack is nigh impossible.

So, I have started looking around at the other proper wheel drive alternatives.  What do you guys think of ...

Merc C200 Kompressor
BMW 320 D
Jag X-Type 2.5 v6

Cheers
Merv

Next car for me will be either a reasonably priced Vectra VXR OR Alfa 156 GTA to be honest i'm biased towards the second option. So my mint OMEGA will be on the for sale section in the forthcoming months.

Hopefully my next car will be a project/sports car to run alongside the Omega.  Honestly, for the money I can't think of anything to replace the Omega with.  Ignoring newer Omegas, I'd have to spend another 4-5K to get something that I would be as happy with.  The only thing I would like better is a good Diesel.

Most 2.6 MV6 will be manual. Or Ex Plod 3.2 will also be manual.

Nought else for the money though... :(

BMW dealers are even worse than Vx.  They did first service on my brothers £70k X5 and:
a) put it though a carwash
b) left the sunroof open during a)

Then wouldn't refund anything!

I've just had a 320d company car for the last month.

It has an M on the steering wheel and on the gear stick, not sure what that means.

2 Years old, 76,000 miles ex sales mans car, not looked after by the looks of things so some of my observations may be due to its history.

Not the wow factor that people seem to assign to the badge.

having looked at the choices you have listed I wouldn't go with any of them
BMW don't have the reputation they used to have for quality, the cars are dear and poorly spec'ed, my father in law works for a main dealer and some of the stuff he tells  me makes my toes curl.
Merc, same as the bmw really, except that the cars are even less involving to drive.
Jag, basicalliy an upmarket mondeo

I know this may sound a bit backward but why not try and source a good engine for the miggy and stick with that?

Driver involvement has been designed out of most modern cars. We cant have you making mistakes and hurting yourself, can we?

I'm thinking of what to do and well - I reckon I have 7 or so years before worrying, I will be sourcing a Y23SE/AR35 next year after some loans finish.

I have 3 years HP to go then I can do some work!

Worst case I'm investigating off roaders - and I'm not impressed as road cars

What the hell is it with us? I've only had my omega five months and I can't stop looking for newer/faster/better. Omega of course. Trouble is, if I find one, then I'll have to do cambelt, oil flush, coolant flush, breathers etc...and I've only just finished spending a fortune on this one!!

I also have the same thoughts on what to buy next which will be in about 3 years time when My omega reaches the 100K. I think it will be the BMW 5 series tourer, Like the merc's on the outside but dont like the inside layout or the comfort zone tried a couple before buying the omega estate, it was 50/50 with the bmw or omega, the dash on the facelift omega that made me choose over the BMW. But I do get the best of both worlds, my son owns a BMW M3 so do get to drive it from time to time. The only thing that I have noticed whilst driving it, many motorist do not let you out in to the  main traffic from side roads etc, do not seem to have that problem with the omega it might be the  humble vauxhall badge that helps.

I admire your optimism. Not many people plan around their omega lasting another three years ;D

Geez, it'll just be broken in!  I've 150K on mine, can easily run it another 5yrs/50K+  My only serious concern is the cost of petrol.

Unfortunately there is nor answer to your question... I used to change car every three years, the reason I am still on this forum after 5 years of current car ownership is that there is nothing to replace it with!

More to the point:

Merc C200 Kompressor - C-class is a Vectra-sized car with a very unrefined and noisy 4-pot (albeit super-charged) engine.

BMW 320 D - Again Vectra-sized car - too small for me.

Jag X-Type 2.5 v6 - OK, so we moved from the Vectra to the Ford Mondeo now... and we lost the RWD on the way. Why not just buy a Mondeo ST200 or Vectra SRi V6?

No, I'm afraid that if you are looking for a decent-sized RWD car with a down-to-earth price tag you need to look across the pond - Chrysler 300C ot Cadillac CTS.

I miss my F-Reg 2.9 Granada Scorpio company car.... I know, it's a Ford, but it was fun.
