Took the car for a nice run down to Skeggy on Sunday.
Now I seem to have picked up another problem :(
Sometimes, when I brake lightly, i'm getting a harsh vibration though the brake peddle and the steering wheel.
If I press harder, the vibration disappears.
The car does stop in a straight line.
I know the front discs have seen better days but there is no sign of warping or lip on the outer edge on the disc.
The front pads are Mintex 1144's and have done about 6000 miles on them with plenty of meat left.
Any ideas ?
-
wheel bearing? :-\
-
Warped front discs.
-
What state are the front wishbone bushes in?
-
Out of interest, what condition are the inside edges of the disks in?
-
Although in this case, I'd be checking wishbone bushes.
-
Thanks for that lot :)
I've got to pop out so i'll have a poke around later if its still light outside :y
Just out of interest, when I got the car, it was pulling to one side but a good clean of the calliper's and new pads sorted it out.
Iirc, these are Lucas calliper's. Do Lucas sell a service kit for them so I can strip them down and do the job properly ?
-
Vauxhaul might.
Inner edge of disc rusted if it's the same each time, or wishbones bushes failed which tends to give a random "flap" from the steering like a tank slapper. More of a wobble.
I'd guess at inside edge of discs rusted but could be either.
-
It's really unlikely to be a caliper problem. Wishbone bushes would be top of my list, an examination of the steering linkage is always a good idea, and knackered topmounts/strut bearings would be worth considering. Actually, if you suspect the latter, inspecting them probably isn't worth the hassle; replacement would be the way to go.

Spot on, well the first inch or so is scored :y :y
What could be causing this ?
I'll poke the wishbones with my scaffold pipe when I find it tomorrow ::)
Am I right in thinking that to check the wishbones, the car needs to have its weight on the wheels ?
-
Play is better identified with no weight on the wheels :y
-
Re discs, they all do it.
Heat resistant paint greatly improves matters though. Ebc dimpled/grooved discs last quite well. Not sure they take major punishment though.
So painting Gm discs would help the rust issue I'm fairly sure.

50/50 and guess which one I choose ::) ;D
Cheers Al :)

I'm beginning to kind I need to be a chav, as due to less use (by me), mine keep going the same way before I've worn the tinkers out.
I'll get meself a baseball cap, coz itz ware itz at, init?

Oh shutup ;D

Just be sure to paint them black so that they might absorb heat faster :D
-
It was a tip from the Master btw. Various makes come pre painted silver.

reply #2 and #3 .. but if that doesnt satisfy try sanding the discs ;D :y

Ahem. REPLY NUMBER 9 ::)

Do the pads not sweep 98%ish of the entire disc face :-\
-
Yes they do.
But the rust starts on the outer most edge where the vents are on the circumference. It's just a matter if time until starts to affect the swept area. Where it creeps in is where the vibration starts.
There pics non here somewhere.
BUT if the entire disc is painted the rust takes longer to take hold. About a year. They still go rusty in the end, and the paint comes off with the rust. The extra year gives the discs a chance to wear out before the rust on the inner edge becomes an issue and vibration and performance are affected.
Not sure why it's just the inner edge. More splashing I guess, and the heat shield/splash guard(?) leaves the bottom inch exposed.
Anyway. Going by my ebc's. Gm discs, degrease, paint with a decent heat resistant paint, leave over night, then fit. I rekon. :)

Worth a shot...
TC discs for the Vectra C are painted... must be a new fangled idea :-\
-
vw polo rear discs are painted and do they ever need it!

The edges and the inners are painted with heat resistant paint, the pads soon rub any overspray off and then it gives a bit longer before the corrosion sets in on the iron.

yep.. but still the disc face wears unevenly and also leaving very sharp edges :-\
ps: I can see those kind of 3d surface map discs very frequently as my citizens use them till no brakes ;D
