Title: Black goo for rad leak?
Post by: chrisgixer on 13 March 2014, 17:33:04
Source of leak appears to be a temp sensor fitting under top hose battery side.

There's an alloy washer and black goo to seal it in place.

Is this the same black goo for the cam covers? Or can I use cam cover black goo, as that's all I have currently?

I'd have thought the ally washer would have done all the sealing  :-\ How about winding PTFE tape around the sensor?  :-\

New sensor should cure, unless it's previously been over tightened... In which case you might be looking at a new rad :-\

Alloy washer seals to the plastic end cap on the rad.

Would need something softer than alloy, I would of thought. :-\

Further inspection of the black goo seal removed from the sensor reveals its perished externally. But still very compliant otherwise. :(

Also have another ad here from the mv8 project.

Sensor fitment appears the same externally.

items 33 & 34  :-\ ......  both have zero in the quantity column  :-\

The fittings on my rad don't have any further sealant on them  ;)

Descriptions don't appear related in any way, yet they are included. :-\

34 is threadlock used on aircon fan motor to frame screws.
33 is possibly used to glue the upper rubber mounting blocks to the radiator fixings.

When I changed my radiator a year ago (is it that long already ?) I used no "goo" of any description anywhere. And not a single drop of fluid has been added to the system since that time.

Alloy washer doesn't seem correct. It's quite narrow. If not centred by hand it won't sit central. Although it seemed lined up and was tight enough before removal.

One for the dealers in the morning.

No its all still in bits. Sensor itself, facing the coolant, is a solid lump of brass. No way that's leaking. If that's what you mean?

Meant that the seal on the other one might be in better nick, and therefore able to prove that the seal is the fault rather than the rad itself :y

Yes I did have that thought, but I'm reluctant to keep pinching bits off that car. Tbh.

...although swapping the rad on that will be much simpler when its finished, given the lack of intake and plenum.

Kind offer, thanks, but it needs to be back together tomorrow. :)

Might just fit the other rad. See what the dealers say in the am.

All back together. See what puddles we get in the morning.
