I looked at this but I'm too thick to understand. :-\

Does it mean that a plate on retension is not actually on the car, and that the said plate is not actually owned by anyone?

On retention, means you have the right to use the registration but are retaining it on a certificate for a later date.
The plate is either assigned to a vehicle, i.e. is actually on the vehicle or is 'on retention'.

Blandings............. :D :D

Have you got, or are you buying a number that is not on a car? If you buy a number and do not put it straight on a car it will be on 'Retention' until you put it on a car, same if you are changing cars, you may take it off before selling and put it on Retention....... :y :y

No....but I have a private plate on car that I own.........Would this make me liable for retention fees that seem to vary between £25 and £130 a year?

If the plate is assigned to a vehicle, there is no fee. If you removed the plate and put it on retention (i.e. on a certificate) you would be liable for fees.

A retention cert is just a way of 'banking' a number to use on a car at a later date.

All four brain cells are now working in unison. Things are now much clearer. :y

Personally I dislike 'private plates'.......... Fine for people (footballers) in leafy Cheshire and Surrey but.......... :-\ :-\ :-\

If you are serious I can PM you the number, Mr Vamps. I don't think it's worth much. :y

Also, if I sell it what number would replace it? I suppose that's  for the DVLC to decide.

My neighbour has an X red Honda Civic with 'OOF' suffix if anyone might want to make a offer. I think they'll be scrapping it or selling it on soon  ???

The original registration mark will be put back on it!
Swansea will let you know what it was/will be!

Is there cost involved?

I imagine so. :(

A registration mark - or reg number - can be in one of three places, in my experience.

1) On a car (needs no further explanation)

2) On retention (taken from a car and transferred to a piece of paper, at a cost (£105, if I recall) so that the cherished/private number is available for sale or transfer.  ***

3) Within DVLA either as not yet issued or from a behicle thats been scrapped such that the number becomes void and back into the annuls of DVLA.

It may reappear at a DVLA auction at some future time, if deemed worthy, but most simply disappear, TBH.

*** It is generally by this means that number plate resellers make their dosh, as advertised in the sunday supplements and similar.

Any clearer?  What number you got to dispose of?  PM is you wish, as can assist further with means to get a valuation if required.

 :)

Think its £80 to transfer between vehicles and an additional £25 if you want it on retention....   :)
